Wet 'n Wild Lip Gloss
February 28, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Lip gloss is in, right?? I hope so because that's all I wear anymore. And if you've shopped and used lipgloss much, you know it can get expensive as each tube is not cheap and you go through it quickly. But I found a cost-effective, neutral lip gloss that I've caught more than one friend smearing on the exact same thing. I feel 12 years old saying it, but check out Wet 'n Wild's MegaSlicks Lip Gloss in Bronze Berry. It's a great every-day color and cheap enough to get several tubes at once to tuck in all those makeup bags and pocketbooks. You should find it for $1.99 at your local CVS or Walgreens.

Tivo Remote Wireless G USB Network Adapter
February 27, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Apparently Tivo provides for a way to connent to the mothership to download the TV guide for the owners respective cable access provider.. I didnt have a phone jack anywhere near the Tivo box, so I ended up stringing a phone line (luckily Tivo provides a long one) across the living room and all the way into the kitchen to get Tivo phone access... the wife wasn't too happy about that configuration. I guess it does go against some aesthetic law to have a phone cord strung up in the middle of the house like a washing line. (I apologize if any of the readers still utilize that method). It did take a little bit of fiddling with, most errors were on my part (I forgot my WEP password) and BAM! My Tivo is now net-enabled! I can now even download Tivo'ed shows off of the Tivo box and onto my laptop (have to download a free Tivo desktop client) and better yet, I can share the shows with perhaps futue Tivo boxes in other parts of the house *hint*. Note: I did attempt to buy a generic usb wireless ethernet card but Tivo didnt recognize it, so just go down to Radioshack and buy it for $10 cheaper than off of the TIVO.com site!

Glade Scented Oil Candles
February 26, 2007 | | TrackBacks

For about $7 you get a clear glass holder and three scented candles. Each candle lasts about 2 ½ - 3 hours. The scents are pleasant but not overwhelming like some of the other products can be. The look of the candle holder and candle itself is subtle, too. It’s not meant to be part of the décor, and isn’t obtrusive. The candle is placed onto the magnetic center of the base, and is easily removed when used up. Simple, subtle, soothing. Refills of 3 candles are about $3 – so at $1.00 a candle you can quickly add a soothing ambiance to a room. My favorite is Vanilla Rose, but the other scents are nice, too.

Alexandria Oil-based Lamp
February 23, 2007 | | TrackBacks

I love candles, from a decorative and aromatic perspective and now that I have my new oil-based lamp my husband can stop complaining that he needs to buy stock in Pier1 because I'm in the candle section so often. I received the Alexandria Amber confetti lamp with the Desert Night fragrance as a gift from my mom. Not only does it look beautiful, but the fragrance is amazing and it purifies the air. It's strong enough that we have it in our bedroom and can smell it from downstairs. The desert night fragrance is also light enough that it doesnt make you sneeze when your in the same room with it. I dont mind having it out for guests to see since its so beautiful and in a house with 3 dogs guests are surprised to find out we have pets. It's easy to use.. light the flame for a couple of minutes, blow it out and you have a scent all day long till you put the cap back on.. unlike candles if you fall asleep you dont have to worry about anything catching on fire.

Cant wait to try the other scents, get another lamp for downstairs and I will defintiely by giving this as a gift in the future.

Lord of the Rings: Trilogy Platinum Series Extended Edition
February 22, 2007 | | TrackBacks

I've managed to somehow completely miss out on the LOTR movies.. till now.. I got the platinum extended edition which is supposedly more in line with the director Peter Jackson's vision of how the movie should be watched... since I havent watched the original versions.. I cant tell you what the differences were.. but it is good to see a movie which got better as the movies went on. I think its a great movie to own if you've got a HD [beautiful scenery] setup, and at least a dedicated weekend to watch them all back-to-back.

Now there were parts of the movie where I got disappointed... fact that the wizard came back was a downer... seemed too obvious that there would be a scene where a wizard supposedly dies and then comes back alive later.. and things seemed to fall too expectedly in sequence.. I almost could tell what was going to happen next, and I hate it when I can do that.

Alavert 24 hour Allergy, Quick Dissolving Tablets
February 21, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Alavert.gif
I’ve gone back and forth between Claritin and Alavert, and the Alavert quick dissolving tablets and slightly better price finally settled the issue. Both have a dissolvable tablet version, both are 10mg of loratadine, both are non-drowsy 24 hour formulas and both seem to work equally well for my ongoing battle with allergies related to house dust and cats. Alavert costs less, though, by about 18 cents a tablet when you compare a 10 tablet pack of Claritin to the 12 tablet pack of Alavert. As a bonus, the Alavert tablets dissolve quickly, have a good texture, and they have a pleasant mint flavor. The Claritin RediTabs are kind of gummy and have a much less pleasant mint flavor. I get the good and the good deal with Alavert.

Talk to your doctor and/or check out all of the information before taking any OTC drug, of course! Loratadine information.

Apple iPOD Shuffle
February 20, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Another iPOD review? Well yes I guess so. Following the lead of our dear Amy, I ran right out to buy an ipod. Now I don’t typically listen to a lot of music outside of my car, but with this new running activity, I needed something to drown the sound of my feet pounding the pavement and me gasping for air. Since I didn’t need anything real fancy, I picked up the iPOD shuffle ($79.99 at Bestbuy). And while everything Amy says about the iPod Nano can be said for the shuffle, the product just doesn’t match the price. It is super easy to load music, the 1 GIG of space allows for 240 songs, and the iTunes application is user friendly. But for $80 I guess I expected more, especially with all the other mp3 players out there providing so much more for less. The most impressive quality of the shuffle for me is how small it is, about the size of two quarters side by side. I won’t say stay away from it, but don’t pay retail.

McDonald's Coffee
February 20, 2007 | | TrackBacks

McDonalds.gifI’m not a coffee snob, but I heard a news item recently that stated consumer reports found McDonald’s coffee to be the best deal, based on taste and value. I couldn’t let that stand, so I went to McDonald’s and ordered a cup. It had been years since I’d tried it, from the time when I made my former mistakes of ordering their coffee; ordering any fast-food coffee, for that matter. Only Bojangle’s seemed to have palatable coffee for a fast-food joint. I was surprised that the coffee at McDonald’s had improved in the intervening years. It wasn’t bad. Now McDonald’s advertises that they’ll add the cream and sugar for you, which my polite attendant did, without flinching at my request for six sugars. They use a little mechanism that measures out the sugar with the push of a lever, so it was a fairly easy operation. Six sugars were too much, though – the coffee was not the bitter sludge of yesteryear. However, their attempt at specialty coffees misses the mark by a long shot. Their mocha was weak and flavorless. I am glad, though, to have an option when I wander to the lands of the Starbuck-and-Caribou-less and need my jolt of live-giving fluid.

Motorola SLVR L7
February 16, 2007 | | TrackBacks

So the New Year has brought me several new electronics including Motorola's SLVR L7. I've been eyeing this little cell phone for quite some time. I like the very popular RAZR but I'm not a big flip phone fan so the SLVR seemed like the perfect solution. The SLVR gives me all the options that my other, very basic Nokia never could--MP3 ringtones, camera, video camera, iTunes, color screen, bluetooth capability. The list goes on and there's just no comparison really. The phone is a bit heavier than I thought and I've had to get used to the wider and thinner shape of phone when handling it. Not a complaint, just an observation. My only real complaint is that I can't use the songs from my iTunes library as a ringtone. Outside of that, I'm happy as a lark with my new SLVR!

Belkin Flip
February 15, 2007 | | TrackBacks

It's a KVM switch that allows users to share a monitor, keyboard, mouse, audio and one USB device between two computers easily. It also features a small remote that can switch between two computers, pretty standard stuff and it looks like the designers were thinking iPOD like when they built this thing. My old belkin (late '90s purchase) sucks.. the second machine shows up with ghosting issues.. so I'm not sure why I purchased another Belkin product... maybe cause it was only $40. I like the fact that you can share speakers between the two machines and for the extreme KVM'ers you can get a wireless remote so that you can setup a nice fully automated data-center.

Sportsline Fitness Pro Pedometer Model 360
February 14, 2007 | | TrackBacks

More exercise stuff? Who have I become? Anyway, the Fitness Pro 360 pedometer by Sportsline ($39.99 at Dick’s Sporting Goods) is another item I THOUGHT I needed. The 360 does have some good qualities, it keeps up with time, can work as a watch, counts steps fairly well, tracks mileage, and gives an estimated calories burned. It works well when walking, not so much when running. With a walk mode and run mode, which requires you to switch modes for accuracy, it’s more annoying than helpful while running. I have yet to get close to the same distance numbers when traveling the exact route while running, which either means I’m not wearing it correctly or it’s not picking up all my steps. And since the distance seems to be accurate while walking, I am going to go with the later. Mainly when running I use it for keeping time rather than distance which is the exact opposite of what I really wanted. However, since it does have a walk mode and it works well with that setting, I can’t give it a bad rating. So therefore, I’ll bite my tongue and say it’s a fair buy, but I’ll keep my eye out for something better.

iTunes
February 13, 2007 | | TrackBacks

I have been an iTunes user for quite some time, way before my iPod. The bottom line for me with iTunes is it's a product you hate to love (or love to hate, depending who you are ;). As an iTunes/iPod combo user, nothing could be more simple to use. You sign up with an account which is saved within the software. To purchase music, simply click a button and type in your password. The song even downloads itself without even a confirmation pop-up. The playlists are a somewhat rudimentary concept but being able to add the same song to many of them without duplication on your hard drive is nice. Having more than just music available within iTunes is nice too--one place for videos, TV shows, movies and podcasts. Downloading it to my iPod was extremly simple too. It pops up as a Device within iTunes, you set your preferences--I can do music, podcasts and/or photos and then almost any subset of those--and then you just wait until it says Complete and click Eject to remove it from the USB port. Writing CDs are a snap, done within 1 or 2 clicks. Even importing CDs is easy.

The drawbacks to iTunes do exist though:

  • I bought of a couple albums awhile back under a different account. Since then, I have switched computers and accounts and can no longer remember my password and have had no luck retrieving it through any of their "Lost your password?" help screens. The result: I'm out of those all those songs. Thank goodness I had burned CDs of them and can rip them. But still.
  • I really don't like that you have to authorize each computer to play the songs you bought and then have a limit of 5 computers. If you bought it, you should be able to play it.
  • It only downloads the song once. If I buy a song on my husband's laptop, I then have to copy it to CD and load it on my computer. Why can't we at least have a 2-3 download limit per song?
  • If you dare to go outside of the Apple world of iTunes/iPod combo, you're kind of screwed. The song ype is proprietary in its m4p file type and it's not as simple as buying an MP3 and playing it on any MP3 player you have.
  • Their songlist is not complete. I have songs that I like outside of mainstream music that's just not on iTunes.
  • Final complaint is that you have to install the software on your computer and also make sure you are up to date on the latest version. I can understand the need since it is interacting so much with your hard drive, but it's just a pain when you are start switching computers..just one more thing to download and install. I know that's a lot of complaints but really, for an iTunes/iPod user the ease of use outways many of the cons and I definitely recommend iTunes for any iPod owner.

So like I said, you hate such a proprietary, single-minded product but you love it anyway!

    RCA Navilight8
    February 12, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Alright, Im kinda ticked off by this remote, but its not the remote's fault.. heres the issue.. having the Tivo box now part of our home theatre experience, we've now got 6 remotes on our coffee table. RCA Navilight8 was recommended to me because it does DVR (i.e. Tivo).. the ONLY thing that this remote doesnt do is the cable box menu guide option.. which is THE MOST popular function to use! I can use the menu guide which comes with Tivo but its just not as cool... so this means that I still need to have two remotes. I gotta say though that this RCA remote was extremely easy to configure for my other devices.. it's got a cool feature where the buttons light up, so no more squinting at night.. and again.. the ability to configure a device for it to operate was extremely simple. We've now reduced the total number of remotes down to 2! *cue the Aerosmith song* 'It's Amazing' ...but the only thing it doesnt do is the Guide option on my Pioneer Digital Cable box.. Im gonna call TimeWarner and see if I can get that box updated.

    Dyson DC07
    February 9, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Our vacuum cleaner finally gave up this weekend after 8 years and on my parents recommendation, went out to buy the Dyson which was on sale at Target. And from what I hear, that doesn't happen often. So we got the basic model DC07. Things I like about it. The first thing I noticed that I really liked was the cord length. Way longer than our older model and I only had to plug it in one place in the center of our house and it could reach everywhere. Not saying TOO much for our little ranch but it made me happy. I also liked the fact that I could actually see all the crud I was vacuumming up. Felt like I was actually working. The vacuum was so light it felt like it could hardly be doing anything. So obviously a good thing is it seems to vacuum well. My rug in my living room looked extremely clean after I was done. And emptying the canister could not have been easier. No more nasty bags to change. But I do have a few complaints. The vacuum is pretty tall. We store the vacuum in our hall closet and while it of course fits, it's just not going to be as easy to manuever in the closet when it's in there like the other one. I think that sounds weird, but you'd just have to see our closet. I also didn't like that when you vacuumed, it left 4 smaller "stripes" within the larger "stripe" so instead of pretty vacuum lines, you have like a ton of vacuum lines in your carpet after you are done. Maybe there is some setting I can change on it so it doesn't do that, I don't know. And my last complaint is it is really difficult to configure the thing to use the attachments. My parents were at my house last night and they said it is different than their older Dyson and much harder to do than theirs. Which I thought was odd since my is newer. And it is definitely not as easy as my old one. The up side to it is the wand and hose for the attachment is long and I don't have to drag the vacuum along to use it. So all in all, I think we made the right decision and I'll definitely be recommending it.

    Bowflex Blaze
    February 8, 2007 | | TrackBacks

A little late with this review, but I wanted to wait six plus weeks before giving an assessment. Around Thanksgiving I purchased the Bowflex Blaze ($899 plus shipping from Bowflex.com) with the idea I would wait until the New Year to really get into it. First, overall let me say this might turn out to be my best purchase of 2006. The pros include: super easy to put together, informative work out and diet plans, offers over 60 exercises, and when folded up takes up a minimal amount of space. The only cons are the 8’ by 6’ workout space needed when fully extended, pricey upgradeable resistance bars ($99 for two 50 lbs rods), and a few of the exercises result in uncomfortable cable rubs (bench press is key here). With that being said, the 6 week fitness guarantee is pointless, because if you use it, there is no way you will not be satisfied with the results (22 lbs lost for me). Truly 20 minutes a day, three times a week, and a consistent diet actually create amazing results. The bowflex diet plan is a little rough for heavy eaters to get accustomed to at first, but once the routine sets in…bye bye pounds. Now I think $899 is a fair price for this unit (especially priced against bowflex’s other products), I think this product would be a bulls eye for under $775. Keep your eye out for the people giving up on the New Year’s resolution in March, this could be a great find.

    DVDXpress
    February 7, 2007 | | TrackBacks

"If you can use an ATM you can use DVDXpress to rent the hottest new release DVDs, instantly"

I was walking around minding my own business through my Harris Teeter located at Morrocroft, which is fondly nicknamed Taj MaTeeter due to its enormous size I guess, and came across this really bright red kiosk called 'DVDXpress'. Apparently its a hi-tech DVD rental vending machine. For a $1/night you can rent from a kiosk stacked with a surprisingly decent selection of new releases. Best of all they're located at convenient places (e.g. supermarkets) so its not like yer going out of yer way to rent, therefore location wise its spot on! You can use credit cards [all of em], and even coupons; they've done a great job in making it easy to rent [Note: They naturally do NOT accept cash].. best yet you dont need a membership! I love not having a membership.. wish more business' would follow that model.. I'm not fond of all you other businesses that make my wallet/keychains all bloated with your annoying membership cards.

In terms of hi-tech, you can log onto their website and check to see a particular kiosk's inventory! So the second it gets stocked with the new release yer dying to watch you can go rent it and go grab groceries at the same time in my case.

Im impressed.. the rental prices might be a tad bit expensive.. but Im expecting this company to grow tremendously and end up merging/being acquired by Netflix or Blockbuster at some point.

    Zen Puppy - Peace
    February 6, 2007 | | TrackBacks

"Sometimes a dog just needs to chill a little" - Zen Puppy.

My three dogs are crazy wild and unruly. The treats are a great size for training, so hopefully by the end of the box they'll be just a tad bit less unruly. Fingers crossed.. highly doubt it.. these dogs have had years of practice in unruliness.. they wont go willingly. They do seem to love the taste, and the cool package looks neat on my kitchen counter - if you've seen my previous reviews you'll notice how I like cool looking things so its a perk that the treats taste good - ha ha. The treats have organic ingredients so I dont feel like the lil ones will be as wide as they are long by the time Im done training them which in reality could take years. Its nice to have a product that appeals to both the dog and owner and it will continue to be a staple in the doggie cabinet. I can't wait to try the other Zen Puppy products also.

Back to Nature - Granola Cereal
    February 5, 2007 | | TrackBacks

I need a generous serving of protein every morning, thats simply because I work out every morning before heading to work and starting my day. This cereal that I mix in with high protein milk is my 2nd breakfast of the day (first is oat meal that have before heading to the gym). Its a good source of fiber with a lot of protein. Think of it as a granola bar on steroids, with the added benefit of being able to have it at any time of the day, along with my favorite food (milk) and it is simply my favorite mini meal or snack. The bag has 7 servings which I consume in 3, its not as big as a cereal box, and it sure does cost more, yet consider the amount of protein in this thing and it becomes well worth the price, not that you should ever consider saving money on food that is actually good for you when compared to an alternative thats bad :)

    Brooks Adrenaline GTS 7
    February 2, 2007 | | TrackBacks

New Year’s Resolution?? Well, not quite, but I was asked to run in a 5k in a few months, so I thought it might be a good idea to at least be able to finish it. So with running not ranking very high on my activity list, I solicited the advice of experts (the shoe people at Dick’s Sporting Goods). I explained that running is usually a very painful experience (like driving nails into my legs) for me and that a 5k wasn’t something I was really looking forward to, but said I would do. To my amazement, the experts explained that this pain could be caused by not wearing the proper ‘running shoes’ and that with the right equipment I might actually enjoy running (I know, try not to laugh). So after trying on several pair of ‘running shoes’, I finally selected the Adrenaline GTS 7 by Brooks (retail at $94.95). This shoe is super light weight, has a slick black/blue/zinc/white/grey color scheme, and comes with a long cushioned midsole that actually provides a comfort when pounding the pavement. I’m now running two plus miles with zero pain in my legs (my lungs are a different story) and no longer despise the activity with every fiber of my being. A very comfortable shoe that seems to forgive my heel to toe stride (I don’t know if that’s good, but I was once told running should be done on the balls of your feet. Again, I am not a running expert). So forgiving my complete incompetence of all things running, this shoe has been perfect for me and a definite rating’s HIT! And who knows, after a couple of 5ks, I might actually like running (providing I live through the first one).

    Microsoft Vista
    February 1, 2007 | | TrackBacks

This should be of no surprise to anyone... yes I just got Vista (Ultimate - $399) and have it installed on one of my machines.. thanks to having enough iron in my computer I can enjoy the functionality.. I enjoy Aero ( the new 'glass').. I love the sidebar feature, IE 7 rocks (tabbed browsing with thumbnails of all tabs), the Photo Gallery is very nice allowing me to ditch Adobe Photo Album, and I can now ditch Nero thanks to Windows DVD Maker.. Ultimate apparently comes with a poker game (whatever) and the ability to have yer background be a looped video (whatever).. the look and feel is very TIGHT..
I will be conducting my own tests (speed of file transfer, video/audio conversion, searching for content within files, usability amongst different members of my family and my own private brutual assault practices) so I will keep you updated.. but for now there have been no glitches and Im just spending my time clicking all over the place to get myself re-oriented with where things are.
For folks whom are having a hard time figuring out which edition ya want. Microsoft did a good job of providing just that.. a comparison listing on their website. 90% of civilization is prob good with the Home Premium edition - $159 (comes with Windows Movie Maker/etc bundled for your media/entertainment needs).
I do think Microsoft is takin some great steps towards the right path with this new release, even with how they are now kosher with letting you download the product (elite rulz!) instead of buying it off the shelf (newbie).. just make sure yer completely aware of the logistics to handle the download (the sucker comes on a DVD or 5 CDs)..
Now be aware that you definitely want to do a clean installation cause upgrading is a great way to confuse everything.. granted your applications/personal data would still be installed/available.. but all the junk from years past would be too.. so do yer computer a favor and backup your personal data, install Ultimate from scratch and re-install your apps. Dont blame Microsoft for your lousy installation / configuration practices!
Microsoft seems to push 'Easier.. Safer.. More Entertaining.. Better Connected' down yer throat.. jury is out on safer.. but i think the others definitely are delivered.. Say 'hello' to the new O/S that will rule for the next 10 years.. Im gonna go pull out Ethereal and see what kinda activity is exactly being sent out from my new Ultimate box.. figure out this 'Big Brother' nonsense.
