Licence To Kill
June 29, 2007 | | TrackBacks

"You could have had everything." I wonder if Mr. Davi had some kind of premonition about the shortcomings of future Bond movies. Eighteen years later, I'm still waiting for one that can give me the same sense of complete satisfaction Licence To Kill did. I always found that Bond had one thing lacking in his movies and that was the ability to be taken seriously. If he wasn’t over the top then the villains surely were and it never gelled. True when it came down to business he always got the job done, but there was never a time in any of the movies when I wouldn't have minded it if he would've gotten picked off. This was definitely not the case with Licence To Kill. The story is about vengeance, and Bond is not taking orders. He has his mind set on what he needs to accomplish and this time Her Majesty's Secret Service can come along for the ride. Robert Davi is as cool as they come and was the perfect choice to play the role of the cold villain Franz Sanchez, but the surprise for me in this movie was the appearance of a very young Benicio Del Toro. Right then and there you could see his quality and magnetism, and have no doubts that he would be major star one day. Timothy Dalton's portrayal of Bond at his most rawest is fantastic and completely freshened up the franchise. Unfortunately, the audiences were expecting more of the Roger Moore era of Bond and so the studios returned to the old formula which guaranteed commercial success. However, die-hard fans will appreciate that the franchise was once brave enough to make a movie that took Bond back to his core character. You can clearly see Licence To Kill's influence in the latest offering Casino Royale, but the studios compromising and playing safe again turned what could've been a great movie into another dull disappointment. Bottom line, Licence To Kill is the complete Bond film. It has a great story, great characters, and great action. The cherry on top is the super soundtrack which features the excellent theme by Gladys Knight, and a complete gem by Patti LaBelle to take us into the ending credits. Find it, enjoy it.

General Mills Honey Nut Clusters
June 28, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Apparently everyone at WeCalledIt.com believes breakfast is the most important meal of the day, considering that this will be the sixth cereal review and I know there are a few more coming. But the other day I was looking for a break from the normal and I decided to try General Mills Honey Nut Clusters. I figured I like honey, almonds, and walnuts so it has to be good right. Well, kind of. The initial tastes are all there, and if you eat like you are in a competition you will love it. But I consume cereal at a much slower pace since I am usually trying to get ready for work, making lunch, and making sure I'm not leaving the water running anywhere. That gives time for the cereal to get a bit soggy, which I am not a fan of. The wheat and rice flakes seemed to soak in the milk so quick, that if I put my spoon down, I might as well pour the rest out. Now the clusters of almonds and walnuts were still crunchy and tasty, but the flakes were .. ummmm.flakey. I think if the flakes were a bit thicker, this could come close to being in my normal cereal rotation, but until then I'll keep looking. I can't really call this a miss because it is good if you hurry, so I settle for a Fair Deal.

Linksys WRT350N Wireless-N Gigabit Router with Storage Link
June 27, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Im trying to convert all internet/network capable devices (computers, laptops, security cameras, printers, etc) be using wireless.. I've managed to do that to all except for two key servers which I require major bandwidth from so I stick to the wired gigabit network connection. I was extremely fond of the WRT350N Wireless-N with Storage Link Gigabit Router from Linksys until a week ago (which is 2 months since I installed it) when all of sudden I noticed my wireless machines were acting slow on the network and then the next day they all together stopped being able to go out on the net period. I verified on my wired servers and I was extremly upset to see them too affected. I immediately jumped to a false conclusio that my ISP provider was messing up (tsk on me) and totally skipped the router.. specially since I could connect to the other computers within my network. Apparently after trouble-shooting it was indeed my router that was at fault.. I went through the admin interface (it has a webserver running on it) and tried to troubleshoot and was unable to get it working.. I could see it getting an IP connection from my ISP.. but I simply couldnt figure out why it wasnt passing traffic back n forth between the outside world and my network.

I rarely do this but I ended up calling the linkSys customer support line.. the auto discovery Easylink Connect software they ask you to download and hope that fixes things didnt do anything except inform me of the issue I already knew -- ' Unable to connect to the Internet ' .. I called the support line again.. and they had me walk-through a really tedious path of making sure my cablemodem was working (sure - i can agree with that step) but then walking me through resetting my MAC address, resetting the router to default settings, turning things off for minutes and then back on.. ultimately they were able to get my router back up and working..

Unfortunately the incident returned the very next day.. exact same issues.. I called Linksys and notified that this was unacceptable.. they've got a replacement on the way.. I really had high hopes for this device.. extended signal transmission -- upto 4 times the distance as wireless G.. if others out there have had better luck.. please let me know.. and when my replacement arrives.. if it survives.. I'll do another follow up review and let you know how it functions when its 100% operational.

Enrique Iglesias - Insomniac
June 25, 2007 | | TrackBacks

I've been a fan of Enrique for at least six years that I can recall. And it's been about that long since he's come out with a new CD. I preordered mine weeks before it was even released a few weeks ago. I've got a mixed review on this one.

Some observations I have about the CD: He's got several Spanish and mix tracks on there (I have the iTunes version). I skip those and I kind of wish they weren't on the CD . Although I do have to say I actually like the Spanish versions better. His voice suits it well but you know, the whole I don't know Spanish thing kind of gets in the way.

Most of the songs are ballads, classic Enrique material. However, there's so many in the middle of the CD they sort of just become forgettable and I usually skip songs like Sweet Isabel and Little Girl.
He's got some heavy pop and hip hop influences on the CD which I think is great. In the past, I think he's had a hard time coming into mainstream American radio. His sound is really unique and it never has seemed to fit anywhere.

The lyrics of a couple of the songs are VERY suggestive, even downright explicit in some cases. I kind of cringe at those. On the flip side, a lot of the songs are very sweet and romantic.
Fans of Enrique will enjoy songs like Miss You and Don't Forget About Me. The latin genre influence is clear and old fans will liken it to his older music.

Several of the songs have potential to be BIG radio hits despite or in some cases because of the lyrics. I imagine Do You Know, Push, On Top of You, Tired of Being Sorry and Somebody's Me will all do well.
I'm guessing unless you are an established fan of Enrique, there's no need to buy the whole CD. However, songs like Somebody's Me is worth checking out by just about anyone.

Chop Shop
June 22, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Ok, normally the only music reviews we post are of released albums that everyone can buy. I mean, that's kind of the point of the website. But I came across this band last Friday at one of my normal hangouts in Charlotte that was incredible and I just had to recommend. If you happen to be in the Charlotte area and want to hear some live music, you need to check out Chop Shop. These guys were amazing, full of energy, and kept the place going until closing time. They play songs you don't normally hear a cover band play, such as "To Be With You", "Eye of the Tiger", "Land of Confusion", and "Signs". And they pulled everyone one of them off and gave each their on little flare. Jason and Rich provided the vocals and bass guitar while Sam was a show by himself on lead guitar and Sean kept everybody on track with the drums. I'm telling you, there were several times when they had everyone out of their seat, when's the last time you've seen that from a cover band? Now their website needs a little help, but apparently they haven't been playing very long so I'll give them a pass and their myspace page is pretty good (seriously guys, get rid of the left to right scroll bars. I have a 42" monitor, I shouldn't have to scroll!!) I'll be out to see them again, when you visit, tell them we sent ya.

Polk Audio Subwoofer PSW505
June 20, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Certain items you just have to do some research on before you pull the trigger because when at the store there's no true way of finding out how it will perform in your own home.. subwoofers would be a perfect example of such an item. I've seen the audio niche stores with their perfectly configured showrooms where if you even place a generic grey market speaker it would probably sound amazing. Naturally going out on the internet there's no way to test-drive a subwoofer, so whats the best thing to do? Read up on reviews.

I am a huge fan of Polk Audio when it comes to speakers. Why? Well I know there are better sounding speakers out there but when I listen to them and realize for the type of quality I'm hearing and the price they're selling its a no-brainer! The last time I bought speakers was back in 2000, so when I went back out on the market looking for a subwoofer, I decided I was going to be non-biased and give other brands a shot at entering my home.

After a ton of research, it pretty much came down to Klipsch and *surprise suprise* Polk Audio. What were my requirements? My tv-room is pretty large so I needed something that could deliver big life-size bass. Since I dont have neighbors and tend to prefer movies where rockets are blasting off and guns are being fired.. I wanted something that could deliver the audio punch I was severly lacking. All signs pointed me towards the Polk Audio PSW-505 or the Klipsch RW-10D. I was really impressed with how the PSW505 was consistently receiving extremely high marks through out all the different home theatre websites, as did the RW-10D but when it came to price the PSW-505 beat out the RW-10D.. decision made.

Now I can feel the floor rumble when I turn up the volume when any action is going on and I'm that much closer to a true home theatre experience. I already dis-like going to the cinema so this has definitely given me more cost-savings by not needing to spend $50 (tickets+grub) at a dirty movieplex with a ton of annoying distractions.

Sony Receiver STR-DG510
June 19, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Sony has now introduced receiver STR-DG510 with HDMI connections sub-$200!! Yay! I just had the unfortunate experience of having my old trusty Kenwood VR-407 flake out on me.. note that I did not say die but it's been acting weird and therefore it might be something simple thats wrong with it but I have no idea how to fix it.. so I went to BestBuy to look for other things and wandered down the Home Theatre isle and saw this thing. I whipped it around to see the connectors because I could not believe for $199 one could have a audio/video receiver and HDMI (yes a seperate cable for audio is needed) connections at that price.

The receiver is 500W 6.1 capable, and with my newest purchase of a Polk Subwoofer and utilizing the Rocketfish Wireless Speaker Kit I could see myself being setup in no time to have a true HD home theatre experience with this extremely cost-effective receiver. The BestBuy salesperson came along and even mentioned how this puppy has the 'Digital Cinema Auto Calibration' feature... naturally I bit and asked 'What exactly does that mean?'.. to which he responded that it has an outboard microphone to optimize the receiver output based on checking and adjusting for the speakers, distances from where you're sitting and sound pressure levels. Sold! Apparently there's a microphone which they include which you simply hook up and place right about where you intend to do your watching / listening from and the receiver auto detects and calibrates the experience to be at an optimal quality based from where you're going to be doing all the popcorn eating.

Motorola Homesight Wireless Kit - HMEZ2000
June 18, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Ive always wanted a way to monitor my house besides using a Home Security System Provider (i.e ADT, Brinks, Ademco Honeywell, etc). Dont get me wrong, they (Home Security System Providers - HSSP) do a great job and provide a reliable, highly available and dedicated service which no home consumer monitoring system can compete.

Now the reason I'm wanting a consumer home monitoring solution is not to replace my HSSP but to compliment it with some video surveillance monitoring of what goes on around the outside of my house. I am extremely interested in knowing that there might have been a stranger(s) who walked by my house at any time during the day/night. The ability of having a pro-active security system to monitor the outside and receive immediate alerts if anything gets triggered is a very comforting experience to have. I set out to look for a consumer product that can do just that and the first one I installed was the Motorola Homesight Wireless kit HMEZ2000.

Im a big fan of wireless devices, so when I found out that the Motorola Homesight product had wireless cameras/devices that could be implemented I was excited. The installation of the Homesight application went without any issues and getting the cameras all discovered went pretty smoothly also. I thought this was too good to be true! The wireless kit actually comes with one day camera, and a door/window sensor which I wasnt interested in since my HSSP again completely covers all things related to break-ins. I was pleased to find out that the system can accomodate upto 12 wireless and 3 wired cameras. I went ahead and hooked up a couple of the day and day/night cameras, it was pretty simple to find nice vantage view points from the inside looking out (i.e. front/back doors, upstairs looking out over the yards and driveways, etc) and luckily all the cameras stayed within the range for I was able to monitor all of them in unison.

The Homesight application was a little bit lacking in terms of user-friendliness and ease of use for speed purposes.. setting up alerts on each monitor and having to key in notifications was pretty simple thanks to the tabbed sections (Condition, Action, Notification). Naturally I setup everything to email me and SMS me and on the prowl I went.

I've got to say that the day/night camera did a pretty decent job in capturing a sharp image. Thanks to the infra-red engineers at Motorola! The notifications with an image came through without a hitch, and I also had the videos saved onto the computer for record keeping purposes. The videos were saved in AVI format and the camera's even have a microphone built into them so if the 'perp' says anything you might have the luxury of capturing their voices too.

Since it is Motorola, they have a lot of accessories available that can tremendously increase the flexibility and scope of the system. They've got temperature sensors, power controllers, motion sensors, waters sensors, and a keypad kit to allow for immediate arm/disarm without touching your PC. I soon enough realized that Homesight could also be used for automation purposes. I could setup the system to have a motion sensor setup in a particular room and once it detects movement it could trigger a power controller to light that rooms respective lamp as you walked in.

It's nice to see a product that focuses on the monitoring aspect more than the technology configuration requirements and implementation. I was able to get this completely configured within 2 hours, without any interference from my existing wireless network. I definitely would recommend this product for the price and functionality it has to offer.

Hookaholic - Hookah
June 15, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Im not much of a smoker, actually let me rephrase that, I don't smoke at all. However, at certain parties that I used to attend back in the day, I was introduced to the hookah. Basically you smoke flavored tobacco (which smells oh so good) through a water vase/reservoir. Its something that has been around certain parts of western Middle East for centuries. It looks absolutely awesome (well, the one that I got sure does) and can be used as a center piece or on a coffee table, and when the right company is around, I light it up and have my guests smoke what they have come to love. It gets compliments from everyone, from current and past smokers via appreciation for its fine design and from people who have no idea what it is, simply because it looks exotic. I got mine from Hookaholic, and after I was done telling the owner how happy I was with my hookah, you can now use my name 'rambo' as a promotion code, and get yourself an additional 10% off :)

NASCAR's TrackPass PitCommand
June 14, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Yeah buddy.. technology has hit NASCAR big time.. granted the NASCAR TrackPass PitCommand service really isn't a new development but over the past couple of recent years I've become a bigger fan of the sport and have just recently signed up to the PitCommand service ($10/month) to now get in-depth realtime details about any driver that makes the race even more interesting.

The PitCommand application is a java web-based applet which is pretty well designed and presented. I'm glad I thought it was decent because I just found out that it was an Emmy-award winning application, apparently the first time an award has been given to a sports-based website. You can easily tell that this application has taken advantage of Metcalfe's law by connecting the cars to provide real-time feedback and therefore supplying data that can now be aggregated to provide information in informative and compelling ways. What I meant to say in that prior sentence is that now instead of just seeing Jeff Gordon picking up speed at the end of a race to win it, you can actually track his performance and car's metrics in detail to get a better understanding of how he pulled that win off. You are probably thinking that sure it can now show how he's stomping on the accelerator / brake pedals and what his lap times have been, but nothing could provide you insight to the driver.. well you can also elect to listen to your favorite drivers team radio broadcast so you can hear the driver hoot n holler as he's going along.. and thats the best you can expect.

The PitCommand application is a great implementation of technology to suppliment the TV broadcast of a race. You get the visual experience from the regular TV but now with PitCommand you can track how a given car is doing, listen in on the radio chatter between the driver and his team and see a great deal of additional metrics which gives you a better understanding of what's going on.

I've really enjoyed this PitCommand service, this is definitely something I'm going to keep subscribed, its great to see a sport being taken to another level of depth by technology to keep its fans engaged and more in-tuned with their favorite driver(s).

Air Desk - Laptop Computer Desks and Stands
June 13, 2007 | | TrackBacks

I've always wanted to find something furniture-wise that was modular and dynamic enough to change and fit my requirements as opposed to me adapting to the furniture. I sit at a desk all day.. and therefore the last thing I want to do when I'm home is to even look at a desk. This is where a really innovative 'laptop caddy' as some might call it comes in which is officially called an Air Desk ( $149 base price).

I was very sceptical of what this laptop desk/stand could do since it's website seems to tout that it can do everything! It arrived very well wrapped and seemed to be simple.. maybe because I was looking to see the typical 20 page booklet on how to put it together which was completely not the case here. The configuration is extremely simple, a heavy disc based is provided to which you slide first down the main stand and then you simply start affixing the other accessories (i.e. laptop tray, mouse tray, drink tray, and even a custom flat panel monitor tray). I purchase pretty much all the accessories and even decided to upgrade to the 42" tall stand since I was planning on having so much to attach to it. I've gotta tell you, I've never been so comfortable while working with my computers then ever before. I can easily sink into my favorite chair, and I've got the Air Desk situated right next to it so I can simply slide the laptop tray right above my lap and I dont have to worry about heat issues or the plain weight that over time adds up and becomes irritating..

I really enjoy the Air Desk, I even appreciate the fact that they provided simple velcro wraps so that all the cables can be nicely tied to the stand and makes the setup look even more neater. It's a really great alternative to those who really arent into the whole standard desk configurations that are simply a pain to setup and come at a steep price.

Orasco Sesame Bar with Honey and Natural Orange Flavor
June 12, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Well my friend and I started becoming mmm I guess you can say healthy and are trying all these organic foods. When she first handed me an Orasco Sesame bar, I was thinking I wasn’t going to like snacking on this instead of a muffin or something. Let me tell you how amazing these taste though. They actually make my mouth water for more. I love my morning snack now and feel healthy all day long and they truly do fill you up so you want to snack more. That is a huge thing for me because whenever I have a morning snack, I always end up wanting more food not even ten minutes after that. I cannot wait to try more of the organic bars. I definitely recommend these to anyone who is trying to eat healthier and wants a good snack.

Banana Boat SunDial Self-Tanning Moisturizer
June 7, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Banana Boat's SunDial Self-Tanning Moisturizer is the best I've tried so far. I like the fact it is as simple as putting on lotion. And in fact, this tanning lotion let's you "dial" your shade of tanning going from all lotion to all tanning lotion to any mix in between. They say the lotion has some sort of chemicals to make the tanner go on more smoothly but you know, you never can tell. Even though I am pretty pale, I found using the dial all the way to the tanner was just fine for me. In fact, it took two applications to get the shade I wanted. So I'm not really sure how well the whole idea of "dialing" your shade is but I guess when I run out of the tanner, I'll just use the rest of the lotion. I like the fact the color was very natural, not orange at all and it was not streaky in the least. It also handled the tough spots--the knees, ankles and elbows--with grace. No dirty looking knees here. I also liked that this didn't leave you smelling all self-tanning-lotiony. It didn't have a great smell to it, but it wasn't a bad or annoying smell either. The only real problem I have with it is it the same as what I like-it's like putting on lotion. That's hard to do by yourself on your back and hope to get any semblance of evenness. However I think this one will be the one I stick with for now and it's good enough to recommend.

Rocketfish™ Universal Wireless Rear Speaker Kit
June 5, 2007 | | TrackBacks

If you have surround sound and you are not fortunate enough to have your house professionally wired, you will appreciate this product. Before the advent of wireless technology, there have been less than stellar options for running and hiding rear speaker cables. Fortunately Rocketfish™ has created a Universal Wireless Rear Speaker Kit to aid in riding unsightly speaker wires.

The wireless rear speaker kit transmits CD quality audio through a 2.4 MHz wireless signal that has a range of up to a hundred feet. The entire kit comes with a transponder, receiver, receiver stand, two strands of two feet speaker cables, and an instruction manual. The transponder uses spring terminals that accept all bare wire connections.

The installation of the wireless speaker kit was fairly simple. The transponder is fairly small and easy to conceal. I started out by connecting the supplied audio cables from the transponder to the back of my amplifier. Then I connected my rear speakers to the wireless receiver with some audio cable that I already had. The wireless receiver comes with a mounting stand which makes it easy to place on a desk, night stand, or bookshelf. The receiver also has mounting holes on the back that will allow you to mount it flush on the wall. Next I plugged in both the transponder and receiver with the supplied AC adapters and powered them on. The transponder and receiver synched almost instantly which was nice because I am not big on user manuals!

To sum it up, the Rocketfish™ Universal Wireless Rear Speaker Kit is a good buy if you want to hide those pesky rear speaker wires. The product specs say that the audio is transmitted at CD quality. To be honest I could not tell a difference between my wired setup versus the wireless setup. The only problem I experienced was soft feedback noises in the rear speakers when the wireless receiver was shut off. It would also be nice to have some sort of auto shut off feature; however, turning off the wireless receiver by hand is not a big deal. If you have an amplifier that does generate higher levels of output, there may be some conversion loss. Overall for the $99.99 price tag, I think this product is a fair deal.

Edy's Dibs - Cookies and Cream
June 5, 2007 | | TrackBacks

I only got to try two of the Edy’s Dibs and that was the cookies and cream and the crunch bar. I LOVED the cookies and cream. I am a huge chocolate person and the cookies and cream hit the spot. I can tell you how good they are by they way my co-workers were so rude by digging into them before I even got to open the box. I snatched those up and took them home and ended up eating the rest of the box that night. Those 60 bites go FAST especially when they are that good. I will most definitely want to try many more flavors like the mint or even the drumstick coating. They have every flavor you could ask for so that everyone could enjoy. If you ever want a snack to pop in your mouth…these are definite snack that hits the spot

Google Checkout
June 4, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Wow, that was way too easy and could get me in some major trouble in the future. What am I babbling about? Google Checkout of course. One of Google's newest service stores all of your payment information in one place and allows one to checkout in any participating online store without having to register there. I decided to spend my $10 signup bonus before it expired and after adding my items to the shopping cart at Aeropostale and clicking Checkout, it gave me the option to enter my account information for Aeropostale or choosing Google Checkout. I chose Google Checkout and then was prompted for my Google password. After that, all I had to do was confirm the purchase and within about 2 seconds received 2 confirmation emails that the purchase was complete. No address to fill in, no new password to remember, no typing in credit card pin numbers, AGAIN. It was incredibly easy. I'm not a huge online shopper but wow, even doing it once convinced me to use this whenever possible. See, that's what I love about Google, it makes my life EASIER! So go Checkout Google Checkout!

Fruity Cheerios
June 1, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Cheerios are sort of staple at my house and not always seen in a bowl of cereal. They could be seen in a car seat, under the couch sofas, in toy kitchen bowls, well, you get the idea. Hence, Fruity Cheerios didn't seem too appetizing to me to be honest. The whole Cheerios thing I thought was ruined for me. And plus, they looked like a bad version of the classic Fruit Loops. I have to say though I was pleasantly surprised. They have a great fruity taste, very similar to Fruit Loops and yes, less sugar but somehow it tasted light and airy and still sweet enough. And from what I can tell, the nutrition values are much better. My kids think they're great because of the colors. I think these will definitely be a new staple in our pantry...and couch...and carpet...and van...but hey, at least they'll be easier to find with the bright colors.
