Insignia® - Digital Camcorder NS-DCC5SR09
December 20, 2008 | Audio / Video | Gadgets | Media

Insignia are at it again.. a lean and mean product.. You can almost immediately that this lil gadget is dedicated to doing one thing very well.. capturing quick video. Now that we've got YouTube and other sites where people do nothing but upload quick videos capturing the smaller/impromptu things in life that cant be bothered with a full heavy-duty traditional camcorder.. this allows one to simply pull it out of their backpack / purse.. capture the event / subject.. and go on with their day.

I will admit - the camcorder came with bare minimal documentation - and what it did have was very general in nature - which i was perfectly fine with. It comes with the following: 2 AA alkaline batteries (YES!), USB cable, A/V cable, earphone, wrist strap and a pretty nice black carrying pouch.

I played with it for a good full day - taking videos / pics / just audio recordings and transferred them over to my machine without any problems and the videos showed up perfectly. No need to convert or anything like that - so standard codecs seem to be used which makes life so much simpler. I also tested the videos on YouTube and they showed up perfect. Now granted this is a standard-definition and therefore does not capture anything in perfect high-def quality - this is a fun cam and in a well-lit environment can do the job very well.

It is cool to know that it does accomodate for a SD card and has 64MB internal memory - which is more then enough for a couple of days worth of picture snapping and recording... just remember for around $60 this is a quick and simple camcorder. If you want something light and simple to use - seriously consider this device. Perfect gift for the budding YouTube fan and we all know one.

The Office: Seasons 1 - 4 Collection
November 29, 2008 | Entertainment | TV

Ok .. one thing Ive noticed is that everyone is wearing long overcoats or are just bundled up yet the weather always seems to be pleasant.. must be some quirky aspect that I just haven't 'got' yet.. this show is riddled with comic relief.. I have seen the 'original' British series and this one is just as good. Michael Scott (Steve Carrell) is amazing.. he really is a master of over the top antics without the whole overacting aspect that a Robin Williams would typically bring.. the cast are all hilarious.. and how they all interact with each other is amazing.. its tough to explain but after watching the dvd set one becomes very familiar with all employees in that office.

You will laugh like a banshee and mimic the one-liners you've learnt in awkward situations because that's when things are the best. I highly recommend this set and start watching the show.. it'll make you emphasize the need for education to your kids so that they don't get stuck selling paper in a digital world.

Entourage: The Complete Seasons 1-3
November 29, 2008 | Entertainment | TV

Cant pick a favorite character.. I cant.. just when I think Vince is uber cool and making everything go his way (somehow - he doesnt do much).. I get a kick out of watching his older brother Johnny Drama pick a fight with a UFC fighter or have 'E' do nothing but fall head over heels from relationship to another and finally turtle having a run-in with Saigon's gangsta agent.. and this is all in the same show! Actually I think its all in the same season too.

A really fun show to watch.. I never started watching it till last month.. and figured I had to get my hands on prior seasons to get acquainted as opposed to just diving in.. and Im glad I did.. its good to know the background relationship between Ari and the gang.. as well as the overall maturation of each characters profile. Well worth the watch.. I will admit this is a guy-friendly show.. and funny.

Im off to see Seasons 4 and 5..

Toro Super Blower Vac
November 23, 2008 | Appliances | Outdoors

Ok - its autumn.. there are leaves all over the place.. I decided this year I wanted to personally deal with the clean up process.. it looks like fun.. yeah some lawn-service can do it in 20 minutes.. but everyones got to do this at least once right?

I walked into Lowes.. asked the friendly salesperson for something that will blow and vacuum.. I dont intend to just blow leaves onto the road / or other peoples yards.. never understood that..

Here's what I got:
225 mph maximum air speed
2-Speed Motor
3 in 1 machine-blower, vacuum, leaf shredder
Reduces 10 bags of leaves into 1!!!!

I did get tired.. when vacuuming.. this power tool does a great job! Very powerful, and its very quick to convert from a blower to a vac.. and I can easily see multiple uses of a blower.. quick way to blow dust out of my garage!! Why isnt there a tip book for guys on how to make life simple? This tool would be in that book!

Outdoor Products Pinnacle Internal Frame Backpack
November 23, 2008 | Apparel | Backpacks

I will first off admit that at times during my hike I did not have my backpack strapped on properly.. but when I did get my act together I still had a hard time finding it comfortable. For folks who arent too familiar of the art of packing a backpack - you should pack your heaviest items close to your back and in the middle portion of the pack-bag. Plan on getting a sweaty back with an internal-framed pack (which this is), too, given the fact that they are pressed right against you. Carrying 40lbs was accomplished over a period of 3 days but my shoulders were sore!

This definitely allowed me to pack just enough for a 3 day trip - Im not sure of the detailed specs but the other 3 people I was with seemed to have packs that unzipped and allowed for major expansion and side pockets which this doesnt.. pockets are very helpful.

It is also compatible to carry a water bladder - which is a critical requirement.. I had a larger sized one which was for 3 litres and it slid in with no problems at all.

Montrail Torre GTX Hiking Boots
November 23, 2008 | Apparel | Footwear

Bought these puppies a month before my Grand Canyon adventure.. and spent it wearing in non-stop for that month as well as the amazing 3-day experience. I will admit that my feet where the last thing I thought about.. well not really.. my feet in fact were always at full attention but the shoes did an amazing job. Waterproof, high ankle protection, sturdy and EXTREMELY comfortable! Lots of toe-room space and the standard soles did well. Highly recommended and it may cost a little bit expensive ($120) but remember it is a pro hiking boot and does its job well. Certain things you dont compromise and your feet is one of them.

V_BOT by The Learning Curve
December 11, 2007 | Gadgets | Toys

Now why couldn't I be a kid in this day and age?! Not only do I have before me a 15" tall and decently weighty transformer robot (reg $129) but this guy has the ability to truly transform into a fully functioning remote-controlled vehicle that even comes with an MP3 adapter to hook up and blast tunes off your mp3 player.

I really do like how with a push of a button on the remote control, the bot transforms very nicely into a nice decked out SUV looking vehicle. The bot in car mode actually has the ability to take off! Definitely able to give your small pet dog a good chasing around the house. Granted the turning radius isn't that great but for the size/functionality and attractive stylings of the product I can easily over look something as small as that.

Johnny (yes I gave it a name) has the ability to perform 100+ action moves.. they range from a nice karate chop type action to being able to dance while playing your mp3 tunes through it!. Its funny how with certain products you can just expect consumers to personalize them in some way.. I definitely think that this is one of those type of products. You'll probably start seeing lots of YouTube videos showing off how their V_Bot can rock out to certain popular tunes.

Make sure you are well equipped with rechargeable batteries and of course a battery charger. This big guy is going to keep everyone occupied and drooling over the million functions it can perform.

Important Note: Show V_Bot to anyone and they will want one! This has extreme appeal on multiple levels so be prepared to handle their demands.

Nascar - A Fast History - Greg Fielden
August 1, 2007 | Books

Its no secret that Im a Nascar fan, and you've got my father-in-law to blame/congratulate for this occurring. I did have a run in with some Nascar fans back in my mid-90s but for whatever reason I had written it off as merely being a southern pride sport... I was correct, to a certain degree , with that assumption but as of late that is clearly no longer the case. We've got drivers from all over the place and as of this season we've got an international participant too.

I came across this book at my local Barnes & Nobles store and figured it would be time to read up on how this sport has matured with brief reviews of all notables events. Here's a brief listing that I found particular interesting:
Jocko Flocko the Monkey Copilot
Hudson Hornets winning the majority of races from 51 - 53 and then disappearing
Nascar Converitble Division
First Daytona 500
Cale Yarborough , Donnie Allison and Bobby Allison engaged in fisticuffs

I also did enjoy how it provided a review of each year's series winning driver and one can understand why certain things are just the way they are. The book has a very coffee-table type appeal to it, where you can simply flip through it and focus on what interests you most and it doesn't require you to have read anything prior. For $6.99, located in the bargain section, its a great deal for those who want to learn some history or for those interesed in refreshing their memories of this crazy crazy sport.

Around the world in 80 days - Michael Palin
July 30, 2007 | Entertainment | Movies | TV

Monty Python's Michael Palin gets asked to do a repeat of explorer Phileas Fog's adventure of travelling around the world in 80 days. At first I was thinking this was going to be a no-biggie in terms of meeting and in fact being able to easily beat the 80 day restriction.. but its absolutely amazing to see how certain parts of the world are still operating like time hasnt changed since the first attempt.

Luckily Michael's up-beat humor always keeps the viewer entertained and hopefully optimistic that though he's close to 2 weeks behind schedule and stuck drifting 6 days in the indian ocean on a dhow , ancient wooden boat with no modern day facilities, with a crew of individuals whom dont speak English. It was also interesting to see quirky observerations - such as how in China you could buy a calculator but the checkout person would stll use an abacus to figure out how much change to give you back.

I did see that apparently he has been since asked to go on additional adventures (Pole to Pole and Sahara). This is a great series to watch, shows the true reality of the countries he visits and gives you a very well informed view of what to expect if you were to set foot in any of those locations.

Wireless Belk Flip KVM

HP Pavilion DV9500t
July 17, 2007 | Computer | Hardware

I've been a Dell loyalist since the start of time.. their products never seemed to die and customer support was always decent. I was in the market to purchase a new laptop and since all the shows I seem to watch lately have HP laptop commercials littered within them (and they look really good), I decided to go check out their laptop line just to see what's out there.

I honed in on the DV9000 series line, and went ahead building a custom high-grade entertainment laptop (aka the desktop killer) and ended up building up on the DV9500t model. Starting off with looks, they look pretty damn good. I really like the glossy black finish (the screen is glossy too) with a very nice script-like pattern that runs throughout the entire product. The dv9500t also offers few smaller changes, such as the addition of a fingerprint reader and a different Webcam from the other Pavilion models.

Here's a quick overview of what this beast looks like from the inside..

Price as reviewed/starting price$2,015/$1,199
Processor2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7300
Memory2GB of 667MHz DDR2
Hard drive200GB at 5,400rpm
Graphics256MB Nvidia GeForce Go 8600M
ChipsetQuanta 30CB
Operating systemVista Home Premium
Dimensions (LWH)15.5x11x1.6 inches
Screen size (diagonal)17 inches
System weight/weight with AC adapter7.9/9 pounds

HP are doing something I havent seen the others (specially Dell) market is their laptop line of accessories.. reviewing their laptops they had an assortment of colors and skins that could be applied to the laptop to further personalize your machine. Very Apple of them to do that.

Like almost all desktop killers, the Pavilion dv9500t's keyboard is full size and includes a 10-key numeric keypad. The somewhat compact touch pad includes a scroll zone, and I can appreciate the touch pad on/off button, which is handy when you want to use an external mouse.

I'm still in the honeymoon period with this laptop, if I find anything I dont like.. believe me I'll come back and update this posting.. but for now I've been extremely impressed and I strongly suggest that HP be a candidate if you are in the market to buy a laptop.

Nintendo Wii
July 9, 2007 | Computer | Entertainment | Hardware

I happened to hang out with a friend who just purchased a Nintendo Wii and hooked it up for me to take a look at... now how cool is this game console! It's got the sleek action look down but it is very white.. so it will stand out if you've got the standard black entertainment center.. (Im sure there are skins you can purchase to change its look) and I did notice that the games the console came with never really showed off any of its graphical processing power.. so digging up its specifications I did find that it is way behind its competitors (PS3, XBOX) when it comes to its polygon-pushing power.. this means that the games have to be dead on addictive and innovative to have me spend $399 for this device.

Apparently his Wii came with a Wii Sports gme which simply was a choice between Bowling, Boxing, Golf and one other game we didnt bother playing with.. it was a great way to get newbies brought upto speed on how to use their innovative Wiimotes which are the primary controllers. A sensor bar is required to be placed, typically above the television, for it correctly sense your every wii-action. I was very skeptical when the wiimote was safety strapped to my wrist (apparently these things have flown out of peoples hands in the excitement of gameplay) and I started off with the boxing game..

I was breathing hard by the 4th round! This console is actually making my physically interact with it to play! I ended up getting knocked out but thats alright cause we quickly decided to check out the bowling game next... apparently even in Wiiland I still have spin action that foils my game.. how interesting that it was able to actuallly pick up speed and spin.. during the final golf game ,which I ended up liking the most, I actually thoroughly enjoyed standing infront of the television and driving away for a 300 yard stroke! Even though i did terrible with all the games, the interactivity the Wii requires is like no other console out there. I found it particularly amusing how between games there were 'safety' instructions and 'take a rest between gaming sessions'.. can't fault them on trying to keep their users alive.

The console does have internet enablement, comes with the Opera browser and the ability to message wiifriends.. I would not be surprised to see them at some point in the future try and link up all their devices (DS, DSLite, Wii) to allow for interaction between them.. Nintendo have managed to capture addiction and innovation in a box ... it's called the Wii!

Rolling Stone - The Biggest Bang
July 2, 2007 | Entertainment | Movies | Music

Your HD TV, surround sound can give you the granduer experience that the self-proclaimed 'Greatest Rock Band on Earth' can deliver to you in person... but this 4 disc DVD - Rolling Stones The Biggest Bang' set is pretty close and it gives you the chance to watch them perform across a multitude of countries of their same tour which I always love to watch.

It's just truly amazing to see a sea of people at their concerts.. watching this band is something that goes down on your personal checklist of things to do while they are still around because no other band will be the same. I do think that Mick' voice is amazing.. its infact the opposite of Steven Tylers (Aerosmith).. Steve's got older and raspier.. Mick's sounds like its getting younger! He does his dances and struts around like he's married to a 20 year old.. oh wait.. he is..

Disc 3 they're in Argentina, China (first time visit!) and Disc 4 has interviews of the band.. and this is amazing.. the drummer speaks!!! Charlie Watts actually speaks! Its great to see them interviewed and how they naturally act.. Big fans of the band will not be disappointed! I did like the fact that the concerts were in full-length and not the complete taping because Im very fluent with fast-forwarding past boring segments and I rarely had to for these CDs.. except the few songs that I personally didnt care for... I also did get a chance to get re-educated on some of their songs and hearing how they performed them live. I always tend to prefer how live songs are performed as opposed to the taped album version.. they tend to be more liberal and I like free-flowing on the spur type of 'hey' 'yah' and 'ahhhhhh babyyy' thrown in during the chorus..

This set is only available at BestBuy, so hit your local store or rolling">online.. you wont be disappointed.. its a must-have in your music DVD library and its something that everyone will appreciate knowing that you've got a staple in your collection that everyone would love to own

Linksys WRT350N Wireless-N Gigabit Router with Storage Link
June 27, 2007 | Computer | Hardware

Im trying to convert all internet/network capable devices (computers, laptops, security cameras, printers, etc) be using wireless.. I've managed to do that to all except for two key servers which I require major bandwidth from so I stick to the wired gigabit network connection. I was extremely fond of the WRT350N Wireless-N with Storage Link Gigabit Router from Linksys until a week ago (which is 2 months since I installed it) when all of sudden I noticed my wireless machines were acting slow on the network and then the next day they all together stopped being able to go out on the net period. I verified on my wired servers and I was extremly upset to see them too affected. I immediately jumped to a false conclusio that my ISP provider was messing up (tsk on me) and totally skipped the router.. specially since I could connect to the other computers within my network. Apparently after trouble-shooting it was indeed my router that was at fault.. I went through the admin interface (it has a webserver running on it) and tried to troubleshoot and was unable to get it working.. I could see it getting an IP connection from my ISP.. but I simply couldnt figure out why it wasnt passing traffic back n forth between the outside world and my network.

I rarely do this but I ended up calling the linkSys customer support line.. the auto discovery Easylink Connect software they ask you to download and hope that fixes things didnt do anything except inform me of the issue I already knew -- ' Unable to connect to the Internet ' .. I called the support line again.. and they had me walk-through a really tedious path of making sure my cablemodem was working (sure - i can agree with that step) but then walking me through resetting my MAC address, resetting the router to default settings, turning things off for minutes and then back on.. ultimately they were able to get my router back up and working..

Unfortunately the incident returned the very next day.. exact same issues.. I called Linksys and notified that this was unacceptable.. they've got a replacement on the way.. I really had high hopes for this device.. extended signal transmission -- upto 4 times the distance as wireless G.. if others out there have had better luck.. please let me know.. and when my replacement arrives.. if it survives.. I'll do another follow up review and let you know how it functions when its 100% operational.

Polk Audio Subwoofer PSW505
June 20, 2007 | Audio / Video | Speakers

Certain items you just have to do some research on before you pull the trigger because when at the store there's no true way of finding out how it will perform in your own home.. subwoofers would be a perfect example of such an item. I've seen the audio niche stores with their perfectly configured showrooms where if you even place a generic grey market speaker it would probably sound amazing. Naturally going out on the internet there's no way to test-drive a subwoofer, so whats the best thing to do? Read up on reviews.

I am a huge fan of Polk Audio when it comes to speakers. Why? Well I know there are better sounding speakers out there but when I listen to them and realize for the type of quality I'm hearing and the price they're selling its a no-brainer! The last time I bought speakers was back in 2000, so when I went back out on the market looking for a subwoofer, I decided I was going to be non-biased and give other brands a shot at entering my home.

After a ton of research, it pretty much came down to Klipsch and *surprise suprise* Polk Audio. What were my requirements? My tv-room is pretty large so I needed something that could deliver big life-size bass. Since I dont have neighbors and tend to prefer movies where rockets are blasting off and guns are being fired.. I wanted something that could deliver the audio punch I was severly lacking. All signs pointed me towards the Polk Audio PSW-505 or the Klipsch RW-10D. I was really impressed with how the PSW505 was consistently receiving extremely high marks through out all the different home theatre websites, as did the RW-10D but when it came to price the PSW-505 beat out the RW-10D.. decision made.

Now I can feel the floor rumble when I turn up the volume when any action is going on and I'm that much closer to a true home theatre experience. I already dis-like going to the cinema so this has definitely given me more cost-savings by not needing to spend $50 (tickets+grub) at a dirty movieplex with a ton of annoying distractions.

Sony Receiver STR-DG510
June 19, 2007 | Audio / Video | Components

Sony has now introduced receiver STR-DG510 with HDMI connections sub-$200!! Yay! I just had the unfortunate experience of having my old trusty Kenwood VR-407 flake out on me.. note that I did not say die but it's been acting weird and therefore it might be something simple thats wrong with it but I have no idea how to fix it.. so I went to BestBuy to look for other things and wandered down the Home Theatre isle and saw this thing. I whipped it around to see the connectors because I could not believe for $199 one could have a audio/video receiver and HDMI (yes a seperate cable for audio is needed) connections at that price.

The receiver is 500W 6.1 capable, and with my newest purchase of a Polk Subwoofer and utilizing the Rocketfish Wireless Speaker Kit I could see myself being setup in no time to have a true HD home theatre experience with this extremely cost-effective receiver. The BestBuy salesperson came along and even mentioned how this puppy has the 'Digital Cinema Auto Calibration' feature... naturally I bit and asked 'What exactly does that mean?'.. to which he responded that it has an outboard microphone to optimize the receiver output based on checking and adjusting for the speakers, distances from where you're sitting and sound pressure levels. Sold! Apparently there's a microphone which they include which you simply hook up and place right about where you intend to do your watching / listening from and the receiver auto detects and calibrates the experience to be at an optimal quality based from where you're going to be doing all the popcorn eating.

Motorola Homesight Wireless Kit - HMEZ2000
June 18, 2007 | Security

Ive always wanted a way to monitor my house besides using a Home Security System Provider (i.e ADT, Brinks, Ademco Honeywell, etc). Dont get me wrong, they (Home Security System Providers - HSSP) do a great job and provide a reliable, highly available and dedicated service which no home consumer monitoring system can compete.

Now the reason I'm wanting a consumer home monitoring solution is not to replace my HSSP but to compliment it with some video surveillance monitoring of what goes on around the outside of my house. I am extremely interested in knowing that there might have been a stranger(s) who walked by my house at any time during the day/night. The ability of having a pro-active security system to monitor the outside and receive immediate alerts if anything gets triggered is a very comforting experience to have. I set out to look for a consumer product that can do just that and the first one I installed was the Motorola Homesight Wireless kit HMEZ2000.

Im a big fan of wireless devices, so when I found out that the Motorola Homesight product had wireless cameras/devices that could be implemented I was excited. The installation of the Homesight application went without any issues and getting the cameras all discovered went pretty smoothly also. I thought this was too good to be true! The wireless kit actually comes with one day camera, and a door/window sensor which I wasnt interested in since my HSSP again completely covers all things related to break-ins. I was pleased to find out that the system can accomodate upto 12 wireless and 3 wired cameras. I went ahead and hooked up a couple of the day and day/night cameras, it was pretty simple to find nice vantage view points from the inside looking out (i.e. front/back doors, upstairs looking out over the yards and driveways, etc) and luckily all the cameras stayed within the range for I was able to monitor all of them in unison.

The Homesight application was a little bit lacking in terms of user-friendliness and ease of use for speed purposes.. setting up alerts on each monitor and having to key in notifications was pretty simple thanks to the tabbed sections (Condition, Action, Notification). Naturally I setup everything to email me and SMS me and on the prowl I went.

I've got to say that the day/night camera did a pretty decent job in capturing a sharp image. Thanks to the infra-red engineers at Motorola! The notifications with an image came through without a hitch, and I also had the videos saved onto the computer for record keeping purposes. The videos were saved in AVI format and the camera's even have a microphone built into them so if the 'perp' says anything you might have the luxury of capturing their voices too.

Since it is Motorola, they have a lot of accessories available that can tremendously increase the flexibility and scope of the system. They've got temperature sensors, power controllers, motion sensors, waters sensors, and a keypad kit to allow for immediate arm/disarm without touching your PC. I soon enough realized that Homesight could also be used for automation purposes. I could setup the system to have a motion sensor setup in a particular room and once it detects movement it could trigger a power controller to light that rooms respective lamp as you walked in.

It's nice to see a product that focuses on the monitoring aspect more than the technology configuration requirements and implementation. I was able to get this completely configured within 2 hours, without any interference from my existing wireless network. I definitely would recommend this product for the price and functionality it has to offer.

NASCAR's TrackPass PitCommand
June 14, 2007 | Website

Yeah buddy.. technology has hit NASCAR big time.. granted the NASCAR TrackPass PitCommand service really isn't a new development but over the past couple of recent years I've become a bigger fan of the sport and have just recently signed up to the PitCommand service ($10/month) to now get in-depth realtime details about any driver that makes the race even more interesting.

The PitCommand application is a java web-based applet which is pretty well designed and presented. I'm glad I thought it was decent because I just found out that it was an Emmy-award winning application, apparently the first time an award has been given to a sports-based website. You can easily tell that this application has taken advantage of Metcalfe's law by connecting the cars to provide real-time feedback and therefore supplying data that can now be aggregated to provide information in informative and compelling ways. What I meant to say in that prior sentence is that now instead of just seeing Jeff Gordon picking up speed at the end of a race to win it, you can actually track his performance and car's metrics in detail to get a better understanding of how he pulled that win off. You are probably thinking that sure it can now show how he's stomping on the accelerator / brake pedals and what his lap times have been, but nothing could provide you insight to the driver.. well you can also elect to listen to your favorite drivers team radio broadcast so you can hear the driver hoot n holler as he's going along.. and thats the best you can expect.

The PitCommand application is a great implementation of technology to suppliment the TV broadcast of a race. You get the visual experience from the regular TV but now with PitCommand you can track how a given car is doing, listen in on the radio chatter between the driver and his team and see a great deal of additional metrics which gives you a better understanding of what's going on.

I've really enjoyed this PitCommand service, this is definitely something I'm going to keep subscribed, its great to see a sport being taken to another level of depth by technology to keep its fans engaged and more in-tuned with their favorite driver(s).

Air Desk - Laptop Computer Desks and Stands
June 13, 2007 | Furniture

I've always wanted to find something furniture-wise that was modular and dynamic enough to change and fit my requirements as opposed to me adapting to the furniture. I sit at a desk all day.. and therefore the last thing I want to do when I'm home is to even look at a desk. This is where a really innovative 'laptop caddy' as some might call it comes in which is officially called an Air Desk ( $149 base price).

I was very sceptical of what this laptop desk/stand could do since it's website seems to tout that it can do everything! It arrived very well wrapped and seemed to be simple.. maybe because I was looking to see the typical 20 page booklet on how to put it together which was completely not the case here. The configuration is extremely simple, a heavy disc based is provided to which you slide first down the main stand and then you simply start affixing the other accessories (i.e. laptop tray, mouse tray, drink tray, and even a custom flat panel monitor tray). I purchase pretty much all the accessories and even decided to upgrade to the 42" tall stand since I was planning on having so much to attach to it. I've gotta tell you, I've never been so comfortable while working with my computers then ever before. I can easily sink into my favorite chair, and I've got the Air Desk situated right next to it so I can simply slide the laptop tray right above my lap and I dont have to worry about heat issues or the plain weight that over time adds up and becomes irritating..

I really enjoy the Air Desk, I even appreciate the fact that they provided simple velcro wraps so that all the cables can be nicely tied to the stand and makes the setup look even more neater. It's a really great alternative to those who really arent into the whole standard desk configurations that are simply a pain to setup and come at a steep price.

Rocketfish Twister Wireless Laser Notebook Mouse
May 30, 2007 | Computer | Hardware

When it comes to laptops, people either love the touchpad or they buy a portable mouse and regardless everyone hates the pointing stick / eraser-head / whatever mischevious nickname people have giving this ugly mouse pointer. Which one do i prefer? Well it depends, I use multiple laptops for different purposes, and some of them have a mouse and others dont. My work laptop is the one i use a regular mouse with and with my personal laptop I'm just fine using the touchpad. Why the difference? When it comes to work I want that fine-grain sensitivity that only a mouse can provide, its awkward how some touchpads can sense the capacitance of a finger and act upon them or.. and this is my favourite one.. when your finger is either too cold how it simply doesnt get registered by the touchpad.

Rocketfish have created a pretty nifty portable wireless laser notebook mouse called the twister. I'd like to emphasize the portable aspect because it is a bit smaller than the regular mouse and has a USB receiver stored inside the mouse with which you simply plug into the laptop and yer good to use the mouse! The mouse does require a couple of batteries but it is a pretty light device.

The tail end of the mouse even allows for a bend to make the mouse fit comfortably in your palm and then you can straighten it out to be more accomodating when packing it away. Well thought out, and you've got to lose the wireless aspect of it. Plugging it into my XP-based laptop showed no problems when it came to plug-n-play and I was using it immediately without any problems.

It did take me 5 minutes to realize that it does have a center sliding pad which acts as the scrolling wheel and there's a third button on the side of the compact mouse to which you can assign another function (i.e. shutdown the current application).

If you are looking for a decent mouse which has the basic functionality and perhaps a couple of additional features (i.e wireless, sliding scroll pad and a third side button) AND most importantly compact then this is the device for you! If you suffer from any form of carpel tunnel or even sore-wrist type action then this is not for you, the ergonomics of this mouse are for the non-IT addicts.

Glaceau - Vitamin Water - Power-C
May 25, 2007 | Drinks | Health

So I finally got my hands on this popular Glaceau Vitamin Water Power-C drink, located in all your popular health/grocery stores, and grabbed a variety of these drinks. Today's will be focusing on their Power-C dragon fruit (c+taurine) which has a more red than pink color to it.. giving it the impression it will taste something watermelon-like.. since I have no idea about dragonfruit.

The legend of the dragonfruit says that the fruit was created by fire-breathing dragons. By eating the dragonfruit it was believed that one became empowered with the same strength and ferocity of a dragon. Other stories say that the dragonfruit looks like a dragon's egg. Let's just hope its the former story that Glacleau vitamin water were going for.

This drink is One of the few times where i can detect more of an after-taste than a taste while drinking it. It tastes almost flavorless (hint of berries) but has a distinct smell which probably is the reason for the great aftertaste sensation.

They have a very hip / tongue in cheek marketing strategy as depicted on their bottle label.. 'gives you the power to do a thousand pinkie push-ups' and a very effective formula of 'vitamins + water = all you need' Please dont believe that you can truly perform these stunts unless you truly could before ever realizing this product ever existed. But hey, its a nice change from the boring content typically posted on competitor products.

Im not sold on this drink, it doesnt have anything about it that would make me buy it again but its a flavor that I now 'understand' since some of their other products have un-familiar fruits (i.e. jackfruit, acai-blueberry-pomegrante) that no one can understand without having a taste-test first.

TrueBlue - Blueberry drink
May 23, 2007 | Drinks | Health

Lets get to the facts because you won't believe me how great tasting and healthy this drink really is..

  • There is no high fructose corn syrup in TrueBlue and the juice contains 25% less total sugar and calories than other juices
  • Each 64 oz. bottle of TrueBlue Blueberry contains the juice from 1lb. of blueberries
  • According to a USDA study at Tuft’s University, Human Nutrition Center on Aging, blueberries are #1 in antioxidant activity - surpassing 40 common fruits and vegetables in their ability to neutralize free radicals in living cells
  • Blueberries lower cholesterol, prevents UTIs, and improves eyesight and memory/co-ordination/balance!

Alright so now when I tell you how this drink truly is amazing you just might believe me now. I love to drink.. since I dont do alcohol and carbonated beverages are loaded with caffeine Im stuck with a small selection of fruit/juice drinks. I just recently started tolerating the taste of cranberry juice (thanks to cranberry blends with other tastier fruits) so when I saw this drink appear in my fridge (available for purchase at a location close to you) I tore the top of the bottle off and poured me a tall glass.. I have to admit it's not a fruit juice drink one would typically think of but that doesnt mean its not worth checking out. I've tried all the different kinds of juice drinks out there and this easily lands in my top three list (the other two being Mango and Cran-Grape - which TrueBlue's Blueberry is easily the healthiest one)

The Trueblue website is pretty informative in that it also provides a Blueberry Juice Recipes section for those of you whom want to make cocktails / shakes out of their drinks. The Trueblue company does also provide three other flavors of thier Blueberry Juice Cocktails with Green Tea, Pomegranate and Cranberry.

Give the TrueBlue blueberry juice cocktail a shot, print out a coupon and get one from your local health/grocery store and let me know what you think.

    EatBetterAmerica.com
    May 9, 2007 | Website

Here are some a couple of links to give you an overview of health-related issues we're facing:

  • Adults still harbor childish anti-veggie attitudes - Washington Post

  • America's Obesity Crisis - TIME Magazine

Certain fad/radical diets (i.e Atkins) have become so popular but are all about low-carb consumption, resulting in heavy protein and fatty meals which by themselves is obviously just not right. There has to be a balance, and EatBetterAmerica.com provides some insight to the balanced approach. As people approach different stages of their lives, one must realize that new conditions need to be realized and prior habits need to be curbed/changed to continue keeping themselves healthy. I myself am guilty of thinking my body is still a 20-something year old machine *drats*.

EatBetterAmerica.com is extremely interactive (it is Flash based) and therefore they've intelligently taken into account the multiple ways to constantly provide readers with information. When pages are loading, bubbles with inspirational / funny / educational quotes pop up.. my favorite so far was 'It's ok to constantly crave knowledge. Brownies not so much!'

EatBetterAmerica.com is a site that I would highly recommend even if you arent interested in the standard pamphlet type information all the other 'eat better' sites provide.. here's why EatBetterAmerica.com is different:

  • Interactive Tests - quickly assess your health and what can be done to correct yourself
  • Community - one can ask questions to experts, and even find people in your geographic region whom might share your same health goals whom you can meet up with.
  • Food - Tons of healthy recipies divvied up by what your intentions are (i.e. diabetic-friendly, weight management, vitality and Heart Health)
  • Fitness - Interactive quiz which takes in your preferences and provides a valuable alternative set of activity/exercise ideas one can do. Since i sit at a desk from 9-5 I picked up the idea of parking farther from my office to get in a healthy walk.

EatBetterAmerica.com at one point (probably still do) even provided little blue rubber rings which you could wear at all times to visually provide you a reminder to 'Eat Better' which is inscribed on the inside of the ring. These little helpful supporting reminders are what many people need to just nudge them into getting a healthy side of veggies instead of something deep-fried.

iPod Nano with Chocolate Gift Set
    May 4, 2007 | Media | Mothers Day

Looking for a mp3 player that's dependable, popular and extremely well recommended because you know your mom requires a product that has been proven and tested beyond all means? Apple's iPod Nano answers that question hands down. The standard iPod and iPod shuffle are great devices too but they are either too big or just too small to comfortably use or keep on you for extended periods of time. This special Mothers Day edition product of the iPod Nano (pink or silver in color) with a variety of chocolates all bundled up together is the perfect gift to give your mom for mothers day. How often do popular gadgets get bundled up with chocolate to be the perfect all in one gift? Hardly ever. The iPod itself is the 4GB edition which allows for at least a good thousand songs worth of files can be loaded up on the device, and an extremely sharp photo-friendly color screen where pictures of the family and album artwork can be displayed as songs are played. As with all Apple iPod products, the accessory line is unbelievable. Unbelievably diverse and complete in that one can buy a docking station which can turn your iPod Nano into a full-fledged home stereo or slide it into the new Nike shoes and collect data about your jogs!
A full charge takes 3 hours to last the iPod about 14 hours of non-stop listening.. that should be more than enough to get you through to your next charge. I did notice though that there was no FM capability, thats ok I dont see/hear too many people listening to terrestrial radio anymore.
Getting back to this special promotion of the iPod and Chocolate Gift Set, I think that one can not go wrong with this as a gift to any lady (mother/wife/girl-friend) in your life whom deserves something special. Get it before its gone, it will be unveiled on May 6th at your BestBuy store.

    Philips Digital Photo Frame - 9FF2CME / 37
    May 1, 2007 | Gadgets | Mothers Day

I work in a very large company where too often I keep getting moved whenever I get re-org'ed/promoted/whatever else that may cause me to move my office to a new location. With each of the moves, more and more of my belongings have stayed in boxes unpacked, along with pictures of family which have now become extremely outdated.I also tend to friendly inquire, whenever I visit anyone's office where they have family pictures up, as to whom is in those pictures and get an appreciation for everyone's unique backgrounds and proud moments. Unfortunately it seems too often that these pictures are usually at least 2-3 years old, and one person had some going as far back as 7 years only because they just gave up on the 'updating the pictures' game.

Philips Photo Frame comes to the rescue! Now you can have a single digital frame which contains all your updated pictures amongst your older pictures to make you feel like you're on top of the picture game. Everyone's purchased digital cameras so why are you resorting to using traditional photos for showing off your proud moments/loved ones? Copy those digial pictures directly to the Philips Photo Frame by connecting it to your computer via a USB cable (has an internal memory capable of storing 110-150 pictures) or simply plug in a memory stick (Compact Flash-CF, Sony Memory Stick, Secure Digital-SD and xD card compatible).

The Philips Photo Frame is just amazing on so many levels. The classy silver frame, and the fact that it has a 9" viewable screen (pictures can be clearly seen across your office during the day) with great resolution is a smash hit. The menu is extremely simple to use, it only has 3 buttons and one joystick type dial located on the back to give you all the control you need. I really liked the fact that you could also program it to turn off and on at certain times during the weekday/weekend; therefore, you dont have to worry about turning it on/off as you carry about doing your work.
If I were to find a con, it would have to be that I would have to determine how to position the frame (portait or landscape setting) so that the pictures are utilizing the viewable area to the fullest extent. I just realized thats not really a shortcoming of the product but of perhaps how I've taken pictures in the past, so scratch that and I just need to learn to take better pictures.

The digital frame has a bunch of great functionality (dynamic collage creations/randomizing pictures) and ability to auto-sense how its setup to display pictures in portait or landscape mode. I thoroughly recommend the Philips Photo Frame, it might be a tad expensive ($200) but take a look at the competition and you'll realize its worth it.

Pecan Caramel Apple - Caramel Apple Gift Company
    April 27, 2007 | Candy

Growing up I've always referred to these as Toffee Apples and had them on Guy Fawkes day.. probably since it coincided with when apple's were harvested i guess?.. Im sure a lot of you are scratching your heads trying to figure that out.. but thats alright.
As of today, I now realize what a Caramel Apple should look and taste like. I was raised on plain toffee/caramel covered apples and realized that I've been missing out on having an extra layer of candy goodness cover the caramel coating. The extra layer I'm referring to are the small pecan pieces that gives you an initial crunch followed by the sourness of a crisp granny smith apple and finally the gooeyness of the caramel factor which just envelopes everything in your mouth to give it a wonderful taste. I love caramel and pecans, and they do just go really well with apples.
I did split the Pecan Candy Apple with my 10-year old daughter and enjoyed just seeing her bite her way though it. I did feel like she was missing out on the whole experience of building a bonfire and celebrating Guy Fawkes day; but, Im at least comforted at knowing that she's enjoying a unique treat that every kid loves and will reflect back on as notable memory. Funny how certain items make you reflect back on earlier times, apparently for me caramel apples are one of those items.
Caramel Apple Gift Company have done an amazing job with their apples, they have a lot of caramel apple varieties and beautifully decorated ones to match specific occaisions that might require them! Also a great gift to provide to a candy addict or to a family with kids (Caramel Apple 4 Pack Sampler) whom would enjoy a rememberable healthy candy snack.
I should also note that thankfully the Caramel Apple Gift Company provide a very helpful tag with their apples detailing serving instructions which made things much more efficient.

    Phillips Lobster Bisque
    April 23, 2007 | Soup

Nothing beats a nice bowl of lobster bisque.. I can't remember where I had the 'one' which made me a total convert.. but I know that any time I hit the coasts on vacation/business I always try and find a local restaurant that serves this dish up.
I was shocked to see this product, Phillips Lobster Bisque, in the frozen foods section of my grocery store. I should have backed off and made the generally true observation of how frozen food are usually a miss when it comes to taste/quality.
Unfortunately this too was a miss. I followed the directions pretty closely since I really wanted it to come out good, and the reason for it being classified as a miss is due to the lack of lobster meat. I wasn't expecting healthy chunks but I felt that to meet the $5 price they had to cut corners somewhere.
For the ones whom have never had this soup before, I highly recommend it.. it's a mix of sweet lobster meat with spices and veggies cooked in a nice rich cream base. If you are ever at a place that serves their lobster bisque with pride, you must try it!.

California Pizza Kitchen - Mango Tandoori Chicken Pizza
    April 19, 2007 | Junk Food | Meals

There has to be a California Pizza Kitchen by where you live.. it probably is packed therefore requiring a 30 minute wait to be seated.. but if you are lucky enough as we are in south Charlotte to have it located within the mall, then you can at least wander around the nearby stores and get paged when your table becomes available. The waiting was the only negative aspect of this review.
The Mango Tandoori Chicken has been pretty heavily pumped by the marketing folks once you step inside the place; and yes, marketing does work on me. I happen to love mango and indian food.. but to have it on a pizza all piled on each other? YES!!! The sweetness of the mango with the tangy taste of tandoori chicken was unbelievable. I really enjoyed this dish and was happy to report that they do offer flavored iced teas too.

    Lipton Peach Iced Tea
    April 17, 2007 | Drinks

Im the one who ALWAYS asks the waitor for flavored ice teas whenever I go out to eat.. ALWAYS. Folks who accompany me now even anticipate me asking and report back to me when restaurants do finally offer flavored ice teas! I dont quite get along with regular sweet iced teas anymore, Im not sure when that acquired taste left me but add a dash of flavoring and Im all about it! I do love the Snapple line of flavored teas (raspberry/peach) but was pleasantly surprised when I picked up a bottle of the new Liptons Peach Ice Tea product.
My father is a loyal hot tea drinker from as far back as I can remember so that is one of the very last few brand loyalties I have. The peach flavoring in this drink is not overwhelming as the Snapple version would be so it makes me feel like its a more genuine tea based product. It seems like Lipton is trying to rejuvenate itself with all the new white green tea product line its advertising which is great but do not forget to try this one out.

    Magic Goo Gone GG89ST
    April 10, 2007 | Cleaning | Household

A life-saver! Somehow some bubble-gum got into our dryer machine. I expect it was in one my trouser pockets but I'm blaming it on my daughter (haha).. unfortunately the inside drum of the dryer was completely smeared with a green plasticy substance (gum after been through a full drying cycle) and was not coming off easily using regular round the house cleaning products. I googled for a solution and saw a posting suggesting a product called 'Goo Gone' and the name instantly made sense to me. I rushed out to Harris Teeter (local grocery store) and luckily found that they carried Magic Goo Gone GG89ST.
It smells of orange, and I found it funny because now-a-days everything has an orange scent as opposed to the traditional citrus/lemon kind. I guess orange is the new scent of choice. Anyways, applying it to the drum and within 5 minutes of wiping it off the 'goo' sure enough did come off. It's also been amazing to get adhesive label stickers off of products and Ive heard it has a million other uses. Buy this and keep it around, a product like this is something you never anticipate using but constantly end up relying on.

    Spot Shot
    April 6, 2007 | Cleaning

This is one product where I am clueless as to why it doesnt get advertised on a regular basis. I've got three dogs, and lots of carpet.. I'm sure you now have an idea as to what issues we have in the house. I should also note that our carpets are on the lighter side of color so stains show immediately and noticeably. It has become a regular chore to rug doctor the entire house every 2 months, and it does wonders. For the times in between, I love using Spot Shot to take care of business. I will admit that I am not a fan of how this only comes in the one size. .and it's 2 sizes too small. I usually like buying 3 at a time. I dont think the OXY line does much good.. it's all marketing and hype (Im open to being proven wrong at the expense of a clean carpet). I highly recommend this product, for those who have carpets with stains that require strong attention. It's $4.69 at my local grocery store and make sure you read the directions and use appropriately.. I just also realized that this is a WD-40 product.. makes sense as to why it's so good.

    Colavita Tagliatelle Spinach Nests
    April 4, 2007 | Health

Instead of traditional pasta where one has to eyeball portions and beginners have no idea about pasta and end up cooking way too much or too little, there's now a solution! Colavita tagliatelle spinach pasta (approx $4/bag - 8 servings) is actually pasta loosely rolled up into little nest like balls and the general rule is 1 nest per person. How simple is that! I happen to love Pesto sauce so I love the two added together, but any thick/creamy sauce which clings to the pasta will do great. The pasta nests uncurl on cooking and the finished result is the same as regular long flat pasta. Tagliatelle comes in three varieties - plain, red (tomato) and green (spinach). I prefer the spinach version only because I've had the plain and red ones all my life and this is something new (to me).

    Almonds
    April 3, 2007 | Health | Snacks

I've recently had to re-evaluate my dietary habits.. for a variety of reasons.. and have realized that my snacking habits were the worst.. so I've now found a healthy snack which is cheap, extremely healthy and tastes good! Almonds are available everywhere and here are 5 quick reasons you need to start snacking on them:

    1. Almonds - and all nuts - lower cholesterol.

    2. They may help you lose weight.

    3. They are full of heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and vitamin E (good for heart and disease prevention)

    4. They contain loads of magnesium, a mineral of which most people don't get enough.

    5. Almonds lower the rise in blood sugar and insulin that happens after eating, making them a good tool in the arsenal against diabetes.

    6. Protein! Don't ever again ask a vegan how he or she gets enough protein. A quarter cup of almonds contains more protein than an egg

Next time you're at your local grocery store, hit the fresh produce section and grab a package of natural whole almonds and if anyone has ideas on how to incorporate them into other meals. post them below!

    Important Services You Should Know
    March 30, 2007 | News / Links

There are services available now that that have made the age-old scratching your head and bugging friends for answers a thing of the past!

    Escape a Bad Date
Popularity Dialer - have you ever been in a situation where you wished your cell phone would ring? No need to rely on a sibling or a buddy to get you out of trouble.. simply call submit a request on popularitydialer.com providing specifically what time and type of call to recieve! It's cool how they've got a 'return to office' and 'cousin in need' type of call options! This could've spared me from calling my brother during a nightmare date.

    Name That Tune!
411song.com - hear a song you're just dying to identify? Well now you can call up 866-411-SONG and simply hold your cellphone up to the speaker for at least 15 seconds and a SMS will show up with the relevant information. Now it does cost a buck a call but cmon sometimes its worth it!

    Amber Alerts
WirelessAmberAlerts.org - self explanatory I think.. SAVE CHILDREN! Service now allows you to punch in upto five zip codes you want alerts sent to you if a child is abducted within. They send the alerts free of charge, but naturally if your cellphone has a lousy plan where you get charged for messages.. upgrade it!

    Insignia 4gb Video MP3 Player
    March 26, 2007 | Gadgets | Media

This is an amazing device! I've got a regular iPOD and was fully prepared to expect the same limitations.. unfortunately iPODs having become the norm when it comes to this genre. I went ahead and installed the software (Audible Manager - Sync; Arcsoft MediaConverter 2 - convertor; Music Store - purchase music online through Bestbuy.com ) and had no issues. I gave the device a good 3 hour charge (using the provided USB cable) and turned it on. The 2.2 inch display is bright! There are only 2 buttons besides the regular ipod-like jog dial wheel, and apparently thats good enough to navigate around on it. I was immediately surprised to realize the Radio FM, Video playing and recording features this player provides. I know its written on the box so I shouldnt have been surprised but still.. having been numbed by my iPOD I wasnt expecting much expect to play mp3s. Luckily the device comes pre-loaded with a couple of videos so I was able to quickly realize how great of an experience the screen provides for playing videos. Oh.. I forgot to mention something.. it does bluetooth! I grabbed my bluetooth headset I use for my cellphone and managed to pair the devices together and sure enough.. i can now wander around and leave the insignia player alone and no wires! The device on full charge lasts approx 20 hours, and thats with bluetooth turned off.. The menu system is tricky at first but its a simple set of menus so you cant go wrong. Oh and just to let you know.. I went ahead and plugged it into my computer and decided to launch up Windows MediaPlayer (as opposed to the provided Audible Manager) and it recognized the player and started synching per my command! I really am enjoying the Insignia Video MP3 player and for its price ($100-regular/$150-bluetooth). I should also make note that the player does allow for micro-SD card expansion.. so you're not limited to 4GB if you have tons of images/video/mp3s to entertain yourself with.

    Blood Diamond
    March 23, 2007 | Entertainment | Movies

Ive got to mention this movie.. I thought Blood Diamond was amazing.. Im not saying this out of any biases, for I do not recognize any of the cast except for Leonardo DiCaprio (Danny Archer) and he's not in my top 5 actors to watch list. First off.. no sex/kissing/intimate scenes! How amazing is that? I didnt think it was possible to make a movie without at least a inferring to intimate activites... this one did it! The plot was amazing, and brought a clear image of the in-humane experiences that diamond workers are put through and how its all ultimately caused due to the worlds fascination with buying sparkling materialistic rocks. I was wondering what the new slogan 'conflict free diamonds' were all about and now it makes clear sense after watching this movie. It's a great movie to watch and realize that Djimon Hounsou's (Solomon Vandy) role was a great example of how a seemingly insignificant person can be the whole reason for change. It's sad to know that things happen on this planet at the hands of villains and go unreported. It's even worse to realize that the product supplied by the villainous enterprises are sold at high prices to the world market which in turn continues to fund such mistreatment.

    V8 V.Fusion Tropical Orange
    March 19, 2007 | Drinks | Health

I did some research on this one.. there's this taste that I can't quite figure out.. Im surprised there isnt an online website where one can guess all flavors that go into these fruit cocktails developed by V8 to provide a full half cup servings worth of fruit and veggies in one regular glass (for a better detailed description please refer to Stacey Whaley's comments from another review). It seems to have a subtle carrot like taste while you drink it.. does anyone else detect that? Apparently V.Fusion's primary vegetable-juice base is sweet potato juice.. so now it makes complete sense as to why you'd wanna throw a million flavors at it, ha ha. I do enjoy this flavor.. and it seems like all three flavors (tropical orange, peach mango and Strawberry Banana) of this product line have that thick consistency.. and I dont mind.. its a nice change from plain standard OJ. I must say that the Strawberry Banana flavor was my fav, so give that one a shot first.

PepperRidge Farm Mini Brown Sugar Bagels with Strawberry Fruit Spread
    March 15, 2007 | Snacks

Krakatoa! I just had 3 at one sitting.. I intended to only have one, but after pulling one mini bagel (Calorie Count) out of the bag I decided to get one more just incase it didnt stop my hunger pangs *they are mini bagels!*.. I lathered on the strawberry fruit spread nice and thick.. *i said they were mini bagels* I work in a corporate environment so I'm used to the generic bagels with plain or veggie spreads *ick* so I was really surprised when I had this version. I also like my bagels without any seeds, I dont want to worry about things being caught in my teeth, so baked in flavors like cinnamon and brown sugar are the way to go. So now you know why I got a 3rd one.

I really enjoyed how simple it was to make and how great the two tasted together. I didnt bother toasting or anything.. and I do tend to prefer my breakfast food on the sweeter side and this was perfect. Now I just need to find a really good drink to go with this..

Hamburger Helper Microwave Singles - Cheesy Beef Taco
    March 14, 2007 | Snacks

Meals which are typically in a 'kit' Im not fond of.. but Ive got to admit to having had a LOT of Hamburger Helpers throughout my life.. (beef stroganoff is still my favorite). My daughter brought my attention to a new product line called 'Microwave Singles' within the Hamburger Helper family.. apparently lovely Betty Crocker has provided 4 products within this new line: Cheeseburger Macaroni, Cheesy Beef Taco, Cheesy Lasagna and Stroganoff. A box ($3-$4) comes with four single serving packets, so based on your appetite you can now scale up or down as necessary! I love dynamic portioning of meals and not having to deal with leftovers! My daughter only allowed me to have only two spoonfuls since this was a meal she was able to prepare herself.. funny how kids realize how good things taste when you put effort into making it! (Note: adult supervision is always required when kids prepare food) I was surprised to see that the packets came with beef.. now it's not the healthiest but it is a convenient snack when you know your kids are getting a good healthy diet.

    Windows Live Messenger v8.1
    March 7, 2007 | Computer | Software

I've had it installed for a week now.. and Im ready to share my thoughts..

I like the look and feel, its got the updated skin and has retained the same feel so I'm not having to spend precious time figuring out where things went.. of course if you update your messenger from an ancient version then what I just said doesnt apply and its your own fault for not keeping up! haha..

I do love the 'sharing folders' feature that will finally allow people to share files without worrying about firewall issues! Naturally I expect the mean spirited grandfathers at RIAA to formulate some kind of lawsuit to stop such a feature because it could become another avenue for mp3 sharing..

Live Spaces, Live Search, Live Toolbar, Rhapsody??? Funny how one can learn about all kinds of new services Microsoft is pumping out under their 'Live' flagship all through this 'little' tool.. I dont think I'll be using them but I'm starting to think that 'messenger' might need to be renamed 'portal' and messaging contacts is just a part of what this new application can do.

I decided to test the application by tryin my unique logic on it.. and was surprised. Heres why, I saw the 'Find a contact or number..' textbox at the top and decided to punch in a friends phone number and hit enter. The search result suggested that I could call the number.. I clicked on that suggestion and up popped the Live Call application... apparently Microsoft has partnered up with Verizon and now do VOIP (charges apply). Very cool but Im fine with just texting people on their mobile devices if I really need to get a hold of them, which this can do also.

A worrying concern is that with all this activity going on (graphical ticker at the bottom of the messenger of latest videos - video carousel/etc).. I cant help but think that from a bandwidth perspective this 'little' application is taking up a larger chunk of traffic than one would expect. I luckily have broadband service but that doesnt mean I want my rich client showing me things I dont want and use my bandwidth/cpu processing also.. so Im gonna go de-activate such things (video carousel) immediately.

This 'little' application has a 61MB memory footprint and takes up 28MB disk space. I can see why products such as Trillian and Jabber are becoming popular, but for those who have mainly Microsoft (and now Yahoo! - yes you can message them directly too now) buddies.. this is the tool of choice.

Note: To utilize all the cool functionality, it does require that the person you are messaging with to have the same version (or really close) of the messenger too.

    Giottos Rocket Blower
    March 1, 2007 | Gadgets | Photography

Unwrapping the product, had my little girl thinking she got herself another toy.. I felt bad to tell her that it actually was something for me. As depicted, it's a rocket looking air blower.. can be used for a million purposes.. mostly for blowing dust off of whatever you want. My Nikon D70s over the year has delivered pictures with barely visible dust particles.. which was the reason for this purchase.. I want em rare dust specks gone!. I'm still not sure about the wet-cleaning solution, so I purchased this device as an alternative [and actually recommended according to the Nikon manual]. I was told that I could have just purchased a generic blower that would do just as well, but cmon!. Sensor dust is an issue when it comes to D-SLRs and especially when you want to use the smaller aperatures or capture smooth landscapes (e.g. sky). It's capable of delivering a decent level of pressure, and ultimately saves you from having to touch your sensor in any direct manner. Well designed, can be stood up so that no dust can set on the end of the nozzle, and the nozzle is a good 2.5" long spout allowing for it to clean the internals very nicely. It comes in 3 versions, get the big one and you'll be set ($15). Dont even think about creating your own 'cleaner' or dare using compressed air.

Tivo Remote Wireless G USB Network Adapter
    February 27, 2007 | Appliances | Entertainment | Household | TV

Apparently Tivo provides for a way to connent to the mothership to download the TV guide for the owners respective cable access provider.. I didnt have a phone jack anywhere near the Tivo box, so I ended up stringing a phone line (luckily Tivo provides a long one) across the living room and all the way into the kitchen to get Tivo phone access... the wife wasn't too happy about that configuration. I guess it does go against some aesthetic law to have a phone cord strung up in the middle of the house like a washing line. (I apologize if any of the readers still utilize that method). It did take a little bit of fiddling with, most errors were on my part (I forgot my WEP password) and BAM! My Tivo is now net-enabled! I can now even download Tivo'ed shows off of the Tivo box and onto my laptop (have to download a free Tivo desktop client) and better yet, I can share the shows with perhaps futue Tivo boxes in other parts of the house *hint*. Note: I did attempt to buy a generic usb wireless ethernet card but Tivo didnt recognize it, so just go down to Radioshack and buy it for $10 cheaper than off of the TIVO.com site!

Lord of the Rings: Trilogy Platinum Series Extended Edition
    February 22, 2007 | Entertainment | Movies

I've managed to somehow completely miss out on the LOTR movies.. till now.. I got the platinum extended edition which is supposedly more in line with the director Peter Jackson's vision of how the movie should be watched... since I havent watched the original versions.. I cant tell you what the differences were.. but it is good to see a movie which got better as the movies went on. I think its a great movie to own if you've got a HD [beautiful scenery] setup, and at least a dedicated weekend to watch them all back-to-back.

Now there were parts of the movie where I got disappointed... fact that the wizard came back was a downer... seemed too obvious that there would be a scene where a wizard supposedly dies and then comes back alive later.. and things seemed to fall too expectedly in sequence.. I almost could tell what was going to happen next, and I hate it when I can do that.

    Belkin Flip
    February 15, 2007 | Computer | Gadgets | TV

It's a KVM switch that allows users to share a monitor, keyboard, mouse, audio and one USB device between two computers easily. It also features a small remote that can switch between two computers, pretty standard stuff and it looks like the designers were thinking iPOD like when they built this thing. My old belkin (late '90s purchase) sucks.. the second machine shows up with ghosting issues.. so I'm not sure why I purchased another Belkin product... maybe cause it was only $40. I like the fact that you can share speakers between the two machines and for the extreme KVM'ers you can get a wireless remote so that you can setup a nice fully automated data-center.

    RCA Navilight8
    February 12, 2007 | Gadgets

Alright, Im kinda ticked off by this remote, but its not the remote's fault.. heres the issue.. having the Tivo box now part of our home theatre experience, we've now got 6 remotes on our coffee table. RCA Navilight8 was recommended to me because it does DVR (i.e. Tivo).. the ONLY thing that this remote doesnt do is the cable box menu guide option.. which is THE MOST popular function to use! I can use the menu guide which comes with Tivo but its just not as cool... so this means that I still need to have two remotes. I gotta say though that this RCA remote was extremely easy to configure for my other devices.. it's got a cool feature where the buttons light up, so no more squinting at night.. and again.. the ability to configure a device for it to operate was extremely simple. We've now reduced the total number of remotes down to 2! *cue the Aerosmith song* 'It's Amazing' ...but the only thing it doesnt do is the Guide option on my Pioneer Digital Cable box.. Im gonna call TimeWarner and see if I can get that box updated.

    DVDXpress
    February 7, 2007 | Rentals | Services

"If you can use an ATM you can use DVDXpress to rent the hottest new release DVDs, instantly"

I was walking around minding my own business through my Harris Teeter located at Morrocroft, which is fondly nicknamed Taj MaTeeter due to its enormous size I guess, and came across this really bright red kiosk called 'DVDXpress'. Apparently its a hi-tech DVD rental vending machine. For a $1/night you can rent from a kiosk stacked with a surprisingly decent selection of new releases. Best of all they're located at convenient places (e.g. supermarkets) so its not like yer going out of yer way to rent, therefore location wise its spot on! You can use credit cards [all of em], and even coupons; they've done a great job in making it easy to rent [Note: They naturally do NOT accept cash].. best yet you dont need a membership! I love not having a membership.. wish more business' would follow that model.. I'm not fond of all you other businesses that make my wallet/keychains all bloated with your annoying membership cards.

In terms of hi-tech, you can log onto their website and check to see a particular kiosk's inventory! So the second it gets stocked with the new release yer dying to watch you can go rent it and go grab groceries at the same time in my case.

Im impressed.. the rental prices might be a tad bit expensive.. but Im expecting this company to grow tremendously and end up merging/being acquired by Netflix or Blockbuster at some point.

    Microsoft Vista
    February 1, 2007 | Computer | Software

This should be of no surprise to anyone... yes I just got Vista (Ultimate - $399) and have it installed on one of my machines.. thanks to having enough iron in my computer I can enjoy the functionality.. I enjoy Aero ( the new 'glass').. I love the sidebar feature, IE 7 rocks (tabbed browsing with thumbnails of all tabs), the Photo Gallery is very nice allowing me to ditch Adobe Photo Album, and I can now ditch Nero thanks to Windows DVD Maker.. Ultimate apparently comes with a poker game (whatever) and the ability to have yer background be a looped video (whatever).. the look and feel is very TIGHT..
I will be conducting my own tests (speed of file transfer, video/audio conversion, searching for content within files, usability amongst different members of my family and my own private brutual assault practices) so I will keep you updated.. but for now there have been no glitches and Im just spending my time clicking all over the place to get myself re-oriented with where things are.
For folks whom are having a hard time figuring out which edition ya want. Microsoft did a good job of providing just that.. a comparison listing on their website. 90% of civilization is prob good with the Home Premium edition - $159 (comes with Windows Movie Maker/etc bundled for your media/entertainment needs).
I do think Microsoft is takin some great steps towards the right path with this new release, even with how they are now kosher with letting you download the product (elite rulz!) instead of buying it off the shelf (newbie).. just make sure yer completely aware of the logistics to handle the download (the sucker comes on a DVD or 5 CDs)..
Now be aware that you definitely want to do a clean installation cause upgrading is a great way to confuse everything.. granted your applications/personal data would still be installed/available.. but all the junk from years past would be too.. so do yer computer a favor and backup your personal data, install Ultimate from scratch and re-install your apps. Dont blame Microsoft for your lousy installation / configuration practices!
Microsoft seems to push 'Easier.. Safer.. More Entertaining.. Better Connected' down yer throat.. jury is out on safer.. but i think the others definitely are delivered.. Say 'hello' to the new O/S that will rule for the next 10 years.. Im gonna go pull out Ethereal and see what kinda activity is exactly being sent out from my new Ultimate box.. figure out this 'Big Brother' nonsense.

    Lenswork Magazine
    January 30, 2007 | Entertainment | Magazines | Photography

Amazing how such a little periodical can have such a great punch to it. It's probably 2/3 the size of a regular magazine, and the same thickness, but purely in black/white and sepia. It comes out six times a year, and focuses on 3 portfolios consisting of approx 12-24 images. Since I am an amateur I always try and look to see what kind of camera/lens the pictures were taken with, and this publication doesnt bother with any of that type of information.. it makes you realize that its not the lens/equipment but the look and feel.. and to make an intelligent decision of how to capture that picture if you have the opportunity. It's funny but Im realizing that Im now recognizing attributes of what makes certain pictures more attractive than others.. the core rules (s-curves, rule of thirds, etc) all come into play and dictate the outcome. There's no doubt that there are a million beautiful scenes out there, its a matter of how do you capture it to convey it in a photograph. This magazine does a great job in proving that it is possible to capture that essence and more.

Paws & Claws Pet Vet by ValuSoft
    January 29, 2007 | Computer | Entertainment | Software

We were initially planning on purchasing the Sims 2 for our 9 year old daughter, but when I saw how there were teenagers making out on the cover of that game.. I dropped that request. (update: apparently there's another kid-friendly version of the Sims which doesnt have any kissing going on) She received this game from her Nana, and initially I figured it'd be just a regular '2 hour and done with' kinda game . I was wrong! This thing actually teaches business-sense to kids! Pet Vet does a great job of making the player very aware of their state of finances and how a business' reputation can effect their popularity, and ultimately their income. I know of some real companies whom would benefit by having their employees play this game and realize that point. Back to the game.. it's simple, straight to the point, allows for a wealthy number of opportunities and options which I can see keeping my lil girl busy for at least a couple of months. Software requirements: Direct X, Windows XP/2000 and a decent amount of RAM and disk space and you'll be just fine.

    Lightsphere 2 - Cloud
    January 25, 2007 | Gadgets | Projectors

So in one of my previous posts,I announced my new sb-800 flash device and how I was going to spend my time harnessing the power of flash and use it for good and not evil.. I got this Lightsphere II - Cloud, and think its helped me get closer to my goal.. It's very simple in concept, and looks like a piece of tupperware. Its a plastic diffuser which softens up the flash, by diffusing it all around and directly at the target by the inverted dome which is placed on top of the diffuser cone. I hope that doesnt sound complicated cause it really isn't and anyone could've made this thing in their sparetime and become a millionaire like its inventor (Gary Fong) has... but if you take a look at his blog you'll quickly realize how he runs with innovation and brilliance..

    Tivo Series 2
    January 24, 2007 | Appliances | Entertainment | Gadgets | TV

Cons: I dont like how you've got to rig up a co-axial splitter to route another feed to your Tivo so that while Tivo is recording a show on one channnel, you can then surf and watch other channels and not be stuck to watching the one show you are recording.. makes sense.. but thats just lousy. Pros: It is amazing to pause TV, rewind to make sure you heard what that actor stuttered and continue on and not have to lose track by trying to ask others or figure it out yourself. Im ok with the $15/month subscription, only because they allow you to integrate it with your home network and upload/download movies and share them with othere devices. It allows you to download vlogs/podcosts off the internet on to your tivo to watch on yer telly! Rocketboom! yay!. I also find it cool to log onto Tivo Online from anywhere (i.e work) and schedule your Tivo to record something you forgot. Oh, and now I've got 5 remotes.. I need to get a decent Universal Remote.. suggestions anyone?

    Nikon Sb-800
    January 22, 2007 | Gadgets | Photography

My portrait shots have been suffering due to my non-flash preferences.. unfortunately that means I have to have the sessions done during the day or in a venue which has a LOT of lighting.. else its blurred or simply dull results. Im great at Photoshop but I prefer to get the bulk of my work done by shooting and not photoshopping. The sb-800 is the current top of the line professional version, with the sb-600 being the consumer friendly edition. It can definitely throw out a lot of power in terms of lighting, and therefore I have a lot to learn in terms of bouncing and diffusing the flash so that hard-shadows are not evident. So now my goal is to make my pictures look like they dont have profanely flash evident appearance to my shots. I know lots of others like non-flash photograpy, but I got to say that shooting at iso 1600 and working pictures with blurred / soft chracteristics is painful to constantly deal with.

    Alfredo Clementines
    January 21, 2007 | Fruit/Vegetables | Health

After my two back-to-back pizza reviews, I've received some interesting comments about my dieting practices.. here I am with a healthy review! Oranges are the coolest, but are tough to keep up with.. do I get Sunkist / Naval / whatever else? ( Update: Navals are seedless and sweet.. go with them!). I came across a box of these clementines a couple of years ago, and decided to see what they were like.. I've been hooked ever since. They are a hybrid fruit, a cross between tangerines and bitter oranges.. the skin seperates extremely easily from the fruit, are seedless and they taste sweet. I usually have a couple at a time, and best of all love knowing that they are fruit! Here's a nutrients listing proof for the non-believers.

    Amy's Kitchen - Pesto Pizza
    December 13, 2006 | Health

One might think that this should be filed under junk food.. but read on. Amy' Kitchen is all about alternative pizza-lifestyles.. read my previous review about not liking legacy pizza.. Harris Teeter (local grocery store) offers this product line, and if you check out Amy's website.. you'll see how they've gone above and beyond the typical 'tombstone' crap one might associate with frozen pizza. For starters they now have pizza's which are lactose-free, dairy-free, soy-free, light sodium, and all kinda healthy watcher kinda stuff. I suffer from high blood pressure, and am lactose intolreant. The Pesto Pizza has organic tomatoes and brocolli florets on it.. imagine that.. pesto pizza. It does taste as good as it sounds.. the pizzas are in the medium size offering which most people should be sticking to!.

    Stranded Collection
    December 12, 2006 | Apparel | Shirts

I've got to thank Capt Jack Sparrow for bringin pirate couture to maintstream.. I've always liked the look of skull n bones so its amusing to see a whole collection of pirate focused tees for an avg price of $13 available at Target. I do find the whole renaming of colors to be funny.. its not 'brown' its now 'wood' .. hehe.. a wood colored shirt. I ended up buying the three shirts which looked decent out of the collection. I just need to find a tattoo parlor that I can trust to tat a pirate ship across my entire abdomen now. j/k

Spinach Alfreda Pizza - Papa Johns
    December 11, 2006 | Health | Junk Food

Its amazin how for all this time the three major pizza vendors have stuck to the basic recipes.. Logging onto Papa Johns and seeing Hawaiian BBQ Chicken, Spinach Alfredo, and a couple other cool soundin flavors. I decided to 'do it'. The Hawaiian BBQ rocks as does the Spinach Alfredo.. dont get me wrong.. the legacy flavors are great.. but Im just not a legacy totin kinda guy. I used to have a slight bias towards Dominos.. I think its cause of their crust.. but I hardly do pizza anymore that I've reset my pizza requirements and am going to start from scratch. Change it up, question and experiment is what I'm all about and that applies to my tastes when it comes to pizza too. Kudos to Papa Johns!

    Chappelle show - Season DVD 1 / 2
    December 6, 2006 | Entertainment | TV

Ok, Im apparently late to the game when it comes to watchin the chapelle shows in their full entirety on dvd.. Rad Chad and Bobbie Joe let us borrow the two seasons over Thanksgivin.. and I dug into it.. I dont bother with watchin it when its on TV due to the milion commercials they run during it you only feel like you've watched 10 minutes worth of material! I figure thats a Comedy Central issue and not Dave but regardless.. show sucks to watch on tv.. on DVD though.. IT IS HILLARIOUS!!! you actually get to watch all the skits you've missed cause of takin breaks durin them damn commercials. I think the best part is watchin others imitate Chapelle's characters.. especially when wifey does her Rick James impersonation.. 'Im Rick James B%#$h!'

    Second Life
    November 30, 2006 | Computer | Entertainment | Software

I'd preface this by saying 'geeks only read on' but its become so popular it's becoming mainstream! All should check out 'Second Life'.. an online 3-d virtual world made up of people playing, conducting business and communicating.. seriously. One can buy virtual land, and setup storefronts and practically live out their life in a virtual environment.. talk about Snow Crash comin true!. I've been a member for a cpl months now, doin the freebie thing but its time to upgrade! There are membership levels in a tiered format.. and its funny.. i just heard that due to Second Life not having an enforcement/policing features.. people have joined and started doing online crimes! There's a townhall meeting Im late for where we're discussing how we plan to eradicate it.. see me on SL! Note: Certain stores are setting up stores in this world.. Reebok, Wells Fargo, Dell.. yah.. legit corporations are in on it too. Infact they held the X-Men premiere party on Second Life.. where have you been?! One more thing.. a second life realtor just closed a deal for $1million due to a virtual housing boom that took place over this summer.

    Sony Vegas 7 / Sound Forge 8
    November 29, 2006 | Computer | Software

Wow! Now I'm a novice when it comes to video editing, and I am a believer that software should play a heavy role in making life easier. I completely understand how pros require all the levers and dongles to adjust but Im all for shortcuts and 'auto' features. I played with all the major video editors and was extremely impressed by the Sony line of products. Vegas ($425) came across as the one with the most pro look and smoothest learning curve for beginners. Couple it with Sound Forge ($210) which is apparently the sound editor.. you've got a wicked setup to create Star Wars.. ok maybe not that good but imagine the possibilites.

    DFX Professional Wireless Mic
    November 28, 2006 | Gadgets

Im usually running around doing a couple of things at the same time.. and Im not quite ready to expose why Im needing a set of wireless microphones. My Canon camcorder doesnt have a great built-in mic nor the ability to accept a microphone input... for pro-sumer purposes I required the ability to clearly capture a persons voice without the irritating background noise. I talked to a pal in the video-processing industry, and he set me straight by pointing me to buying a pair of wireless laniere mics (DFX Professional WR-601) and recoding audio and video seperately and combining them both during processing. These mics were easy enough to use, so no need for bulky mics and all that jazz. I still recommend clearing the audio to strip background noise, but this does allow you to clearly capture voice that your regular camcorder just wont do.

    Fitness Gear Polyurethane dumbbells
    November 15, 2006 | Fitness | Health

You could buy them solid metal weights, like yer ancestors had but why? The hex-shaped, rubber-coated and contoured handle dumbbells allow for a nice comfortable feel while in agony due to training to failure. The dumbbells currently lay on my garage floor, I haven't and won't bother with buying a weight stand but prob the Proform Fusion foldable bench.. or maybe a treadmill.. I need to figure out how to lower my blood pressure anyways.. so weight lifting is a good start.. just need to supplement it with a proper non-toxic sodium diet. Got the 15lb pair for $30-$40 from Dick's Sporting Goods.

    Nikon DSLR Remote Contols
    October 26, 2006 | Gadgets | Photography

Remote control for a Nikon D70s DSLR. I didn't realize how sensitive camera's are to everything. Utilize a tripod whenever possible.. and a remote control actuator to get you as close to a perfectly still shot as possible (especially for Macro). I did ponder over whether to get the corded remote (MC-DC1 $23) or the wireless version (ML-L3 $16).. I got both. Both have their downsides.. the wireless receiver on the camera is located on the front, so you've got to be either in the picture of the shot or at an awkward angle above it.. naturally the corded con is that the bloody wire could cause you to trip or flip the camera. Having an SLR camera, its impossible to ask someone else to take my picture, so this is a great solution. As y'all will notice.. my picture on this thing has now been updated without a camera infront of my face.

    Big Love
    October 19, 2006 | Entertainment | Movies

3 wives.. first one (Jeanne Tripplehorn) is dominant/motherly, second (Chloë Sevigny) has an ego-centric attitude and the third (Ginnifer Goodwin) has regrets about everything.. all married to one husband (Bill Paxton) a polygnist protagonist. Imagine the stories/plots they could create with this chemistry! Now add in the seven kids and the fact that their faith is 'United Effort Brotherhoood' (a fundamentalist splinter group of LDS). They all suck in keeping secrets which makes it sometimes funny. Really entertaining series, a lot of well developed characters and Roman Grant is the root of all evil (he's the prophet of their church). Big Love has announced that they're doing a second season so catch up on how to kill someone by lacing their iced-tea with anti-freeze coolant by buying the 1st season on dvd

LAY'S Hot'n Spicy KC Masterpiece BBQ Flavored Potato Chips
    October 18, 2006 | Snacks

*slurping a drink* hot and spicy.. more spicy than hot.. wait wait.. damn the heat!!! The dark-red devil colored bag is a tell-tale sign to the serious heat it's packing. Its a good treat.. the heat and spice factor does limit how much you eat therefore it lasts longer.. you dont end up feeling sick by having destroyed the entire bag of chips at a sitting.. not that I've done that. So i just did a nutrition comparison of the Baked Lays KC Masterpiece BBQ against my devil-friendly regular Hot 'n Spicy KC Masterpiece BBQ.. and found a difference of just 30 calories per serving.. Baked aint worth it.

    Gillette M3 Fusion Power Razor

I saw the World Cup logo and the word 'power' on the M3 razor and decided to buy it ($15).. yeah marketing works on me.. Fortunately it came with a battery but no additional blades.. thats fine.. i understand marketing and getting the most out of a customer by having them buy replacements .. but hey now I can say that David Beckham and I shave the same way.. again.. marketing works. I'm honestly not sure if this gets me a better closer shave.. I never had any complaints when i used the non-powered version.. so Im not sure why I bought this.. oh.. i forgot.. the marketing.

    V8 V.Fusion - Peach Mango
    October 9, 2006 | Drinks | Health

Flavor #2 conquered.. and I'm disappointed.. for those who remember I had tried the strawberry-banana version of the V8.Fusion line. I've now had the Peach-Mango version and I'm not happy. I'm a huge mango fan.. the sweet wonderful months of March thru May.. yah exactly..i know their prime seasons, thats how big of a fan i am. Why do companies pair the bloody peach with mangoes constantly?! Dole, Cytoscope Muscle Milk, Nature's Best, and even Luzianne Tea are to blame for this psycho pairing.. so someone needs to let them know it's not working! Ugh.. It's 'drink-able' but definitely not one I would savor by sipping chilled while watching Nip/Tuck. Infact, I'm not buying this flavor again. The only flavor left in the v.Fusion catalog is their orange juice. I'm tellin you heads up.. I like my oj's with no pulp and with low-levels of acid.. yeh I'm picky.. but we know this.

    Products that just aren't practical

    3 sided Televsion

Ever had a situation where three people wanted to watch three different things at the same time and just had to have a tv that could do that? well.. you need to do the normal thing and tell them to decide on one thing to watch.. and not spend $50k.

    Geeky bling
Granted it is functional.. it's a USB flash-drive.. but Ive never equated geek technology with luxury.. I'm sure the google creators each have one with their names engraved.

    Milk from Amazon.com
What!? Milk is only good for so many days.. to have it spend precious time in transit to your house in a delivery vehicle.. I'm not sure if they pack it with dry-ice like some online meat retailers but you have to be pretty bold to want this via online.

    Diamond Lashes
Originally designed for Madonna.. .75 carats of diamonds laced onto the lashes.. the creator has now made a limited set of 7 pairs exclusively for Neiman Marcus customers at $10 grand each. Are you winking at me or do you have a diamond in your eye?

    V8 V.Fusion Strawberry Banana
    October 2, 2006 | Drinks | Health

So the new V8 V.Fusion drinks show up, and I'm thinkin these look mighty like the protein/energy drinks that have been flooding the market.. apparently V8 are joinin the trend looks-wise bUT luckily taste-wise they've stayed true to their guns. I've only tried the strawberry-banana and the drink itself has a thicker consistency (prob the banana to blame? i dunno) so be warned, and it has a very strong sense of a health kick to it.. prob why it touts proudly that one serving contains a day's worth of veggies n fruits! The new V-Fusion line does have other flavors and I expect to try em all out.. so come back for their reviews soon. Don't get me wrong, I love the standard spicy V8 but thats not something my lil girl would ever drink, so this is a great family-friendly drink.

    Redi-Check Remote Smoker Thermometer
    September 26, 2006 | Appliances | Household

Charcoal grillin.. and bein a newbie at that.. I'm always having a tough time figuring out what 'temperature mah fire's at'. There is apparently the 'professional' way to tell by placing the palm of your hand above the coals, at cooking height, and if you count the number of seconds before the heat forces yer hand away.. one can theoretically gauge the temperature (4 seconds is considered medium heat). Yeah, I'm not going to do that.. so thats where i looked into buyin a thermometer.. and apparently the salesperson at Barbeque's Galore, who looked like Jon Cryer, realized I was a techie to point me to the wireless versions. The Redi-Check ET-73 Remote Thermometer is perdy damn good. It comes with two probes, one for the meat and the other for the internal chamber. One can even set the receiver to buzz upon the temperature hitting a certain limit, so you dont have to harass your meat every 2 minutes.

    Purina One - Sensitive Systems
    September 15, 2006 | Pet Food

For the longest time we were always getting Purina's Beneful line, which though they loved it just wasn’t friendly on their systems. If your dog has garbage disposal-like abilities and you want him/her to have something decent... go for Beneful! Unfortunately ours just couldn’t handle it.  Being as picky as they are about everything... it was great to find Purina's new Sensitive System which they can attack, reap all the benefits of a healthy meal and not have caused any irritating after-effects. Though the food smells fishy (it does have Salmon in it) it does also consist of rice, yogurt and oat meal which helps keep Bijou / Moose / Magilla's tummies in order. This is for adult dogs, and runs $19 for the 20lb bag.

    Digital Camera Magazine
    September 8, 2006 | Entertainment | Magazines

Sometimes, you need something to look forward to on a constant basis. Digital Camera Magazine ($15.99) is my addiction. The magazine consists of the following sections: Technique, Photo Ideas, In-depth/Features, Essentials and Kit Reviews (I prob missed one or two but you get the gist of it). The 'Technique' section for me is always something I focus on... it's great how they constantly provide new perspectives and/or techniques on the entire workflow (ideas-scope-snap-process) of a picture. The magazine is biased towards D-SLR's but then again the best pictures require that calibre of a camera. Everything is top-notch about the magazine, even how it sits on the Barnes & Nobles shelf waiting to be picked up. So pick it up!.

    Nikkor 80 - 200 F2.8 ED AF Lens
    September 4, 2006 | Photography

I'll start by stating that I am an amateur Nikon-biased photographer, but I will not hesitate to look over my shoulder to see what the other brands are doing. One thing I've always been told was that when it came to lens, Nikon was always top notch. I now understand. When this Nikkor 80-200 f2.8 ($899) ($75/week rental) barrel spent it's first days in my hands, all my worries about this being too heavy were gone. Yes it does weigh 3-4lbs, but have you seen the pictures this thing can take?! It doesnt do too well at low-light, and if you are still shooting in auto mode then dont bother.. this lens requires a learned owner. My best pix have been taken with this, producing wonderful brokeh and sharp/contrasty results.

    Jansport Altpack Livewire
    September 2, 2006 | Apparel | Backpacks

Being a techie, and involved in a lot of projects, I require a backpack capable of storing my gear / devices / you-name-it efficiently. Jansport Altpage (Livewire series) ($299) can be trusted with my laptops, Nikon D70s D-SLR, portable hard-drives and all the million adapters/cords that go along with them. Besides the shockshield feature which sold me was the fact that the backpack has integrated headphones which are lead out through the shoulder straps which also house a volume/operations control panel. Now you can keep your phone/mp3 player hidden in the backpack which controlling it through the integrated controls on the shoulder strap.

    Adidas Shoe Band
    August 30, 2006 | Apparel | Sports Equipment

I was never a fan of soccer cleats with asymmetrical lacing (lacing on the non-passing side of the shoe). Coaching younger kids, its funny how they assume that the asymmetrical style would allow them to play better.. granted some (few rare ones) do; but, for the most part the traditional ones hug and stay on the foot better. Tying up your laces is another issue all together, I've spent a lot of time teaching how to get laces tied properly. I saw this Adidas Shoe Band ($7.99) and fell in love with it. I ask all kids to wear it for multiple reasons... If their laces come undone or if they never knew how to properly tie soccer laces.. slap these on around their laces and they're set! Now just focus on the playing..

    Infocus - X3
    August 21, 2006 | Gadgets | Projectors

Thanks to a mishap at my office, the old crummy projector blew.. the following replacement, Infocus X3 ($899) showed up and all of a sudden everyone had presentations to deliver. Interesting. I finally got my hands on the light portable contraption and it is *insert holy music* NICE! Powered by 750 ANSI Lumens, with a 2000:1 contrast ratio which is more than enough for a standard daytime powerpoint presentation. If you're ever working late at the office.. and you dont take advantage by hooking it up to your laptop and playing a DVD.. its your loss.

    Blackberry Green Tea Frappuccino
    August 20, 2006 | Drinks

Not one to ever turn down a beverage, I ordered myself the new offering at the local Starbucks located within Barnes & Nobles.. I definitely think this is one of the better drinks on their menu for those who dont like hot drinks.. I never usually look at my starbucks receipt, but this prob fell within the standard $3.50 - 4 range for a grande frappuccino. I did get worried when the lad behind the counter had to look up the recipe.. but goes to show they probably have a mature CMMi! Well done..

    LG "The V"
    August 19, 2006 | Cellphones | Gadgets

Walking into the Verizon store, I had no idea as to what they were offering to compete with the Treo.. I immediately walked up to the display case containing the VX9800 "The V" phone. For $200, this allows for a mini-SD card, has an equalizer which can be seen when you split open the phone and speakers capable of delivering an IT professional through the roughest hours of night during a production outage. Oh.. and I can now proudly say that Ive got a phone that looks like Simon Templar's from the movie The Saint. I'm off to perform a miracle..
