General Mills Honey Nut Clusters
June 28, 2007 | Breakfast | Health

Apparently everyone at WeCalledIt.com believes breakfast is the most important meal of the day, considering that this will be the sixth cereal review and I know there are a few more coming. But the other day I was looking for a break from the normal and I decided to try General Mills Honey Nut Clusters. I figured I like honey, almonds, and walnuts so it has to be good right. Well, kind of. The initial tastes are all there, and if you eat like you are in a competition you will love it. But I consume cereal at a much slower pace since I am usually trying to get ready for work, making lunch, and making sure I'm not leaving the water running anywhere. That gives time for the cereal to get a bit soggy, which I am not a fan of. The wheat and rice flakes seemed to soak in the milk so quick, that if I put my spoon down, I might as well pour the rest out. Now the clusters of almonds and walnuts were still crunchy and tasty, but the flakes were .. ummmm.flakey. I think if the flakes were a bit thicker, this could come close to being in my normal cereal rotation, but until then I'll keep looking. I can't really call this a miss because it is good if you hurry, so I settle for a Fair Deal.

Chop Shop
June 22, 2007 | Entertainment | Music

Ok, normally the only music reviews we post are of released albums that everyone can buy. I mean, that's kind of the point of the website. But I came across this band last Friday at one of my normal hangouts in Charlotte that was incredible and I just had to recommend. If you happen to be in the Charlotte area and want to hear some live music, you need to check out Chop Shop. These guys were amazing, full of energy, and kept the place going until closing time. They play songs you don't normally hear a cover band play, such as "To Be With You", "Eye of the Tiger", "Land of Confusion", and "Signs". And they pulled everyone one of them off and gave each their on little flare. Jason and Rich provided the vocals and bass guitar while Sam was a show by himself on lead guitar and Sean kept everybody on track with the drums. I'm telling you, there were several times when they had everyone out of their seat, when's the last time you've seen that from a cover band? Now their website needs a little help, but apparently they haven't been playing very long so I'll give them a pass and their myspace page is pretty good (seriously guys, get rid of the left to right scroll bars. I have a 42" monitor, I shouldn't have to scroll!!) I'll be out to see them again, when you visit, tell them we sent ya.

Apple iPOD Shuffle
February 20, 2007 | Gadgets | Media

Another iPOD review? Well yes I guess so. Following the lead of our dear Amy, I ran right out to buy an ipod. Now I don’t typically listen to a lot of music outside of my car, but with this new running activity, I needed something to drown the sound of my feet pounding the pavement and me gasping for air. Since I didn’t need anything real fancy, I picked up the iPOD shuffle ($79.99 at Bestbuy). And while everything Amy says about the iPod Nano can be said for the shuffle, the product just doesn’t match the price. It is super easy to load music, the 1 GIG of space allows for 240 songs, and the iTunes application is user friendly. But for $80 I guess I expected more, especially with all the other mp3 players out there providing so much more for less. The most impressive quality of the shuffle for me is how small it is, about the size of two quarters side by side. I won’t say stay away from it, but don’t pay retail.

Sportsline Fitness Pro Pedometer Model 360
February 14, 2007 | Gadgets

More exercise stuff? Who have I become? Anyway, the Fitness Pro 360 pedometer by Sportsline ($39.99 at Dick’s Sporting Goods) is another item I THOUGHT I needed. The 360 does have some good qualities, it keeps up with time, can work as a watch, counts steps fairly well, tracks mileage, and gives an estimated calories burned. It works well when walking, not so much when running. With a walk mode and run mode, which requires you to switch modes for accuracy, it’s more annoying than helpful while running. I have yet to get close to the same distance numbers when traveling the exact route while running, which either means I’m not wearing it correctly or it’s not picking up all my steps. And since the distance seems to be accurate while walking, I am going to go with the later. Mainly when running I use it for keeping time rather than distance which is the exact opposite of what I really wanted. However, since it does have a walk mode and it works well with that setting, I can’t give it a bad rating. So therefore, I’ll bite my tongue and say it’s a fair buy, but I’ll keep my eye out for something better.

Bowflex Blaze
February 8, 2007 | Fitness

A little late with this review, but I wanted to wait six plus weeks before giving an assessment. Around Thanksgiving I purchased the Bowflex Blaze ($899 plus shipping from Bowflex.com) with the idea I would wait until the New Year to really get into it. First, overall let me say this might turn out to be my best purchase of 2006. The pros include: super easy to put together, informative work out and diet plans, offers over 60 exercises, and when folded up takes up a minimal amount of space. The only cons are the 8’ by 6’ workout space needed when fully extended, pricey upgradeable resistance bars ($99 for two 50 lbs rods), and a few of the exercises result in uncomfortable cable rubs (bench press is key here). With that being said, the 6 week fitness guarantee is pointless, because if you use it, there is no way you will not be satisfied with the results (22 lbs lost for me). Truly 20 minutes a day, three times a week, and a consistent diet actually create amazing results. The bowflex diet plan is a little rough for heavy eaters to get accustomed to at first, but once the routine sets in…bye bye pounds. Now I think $899 is a fair price for this unit (especially priced against bowflex’s other products), I think this product would be a bulls eye for under $775. Keep your eye out for the people giving up on the New Year’s resolution in March, this could be a great find.

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 7
February 2, 2007 | Apparel | Footwear

New Year’s Resolution?? Well, not quite, but I was asked to run in a 5k in a few months, so I thought it might be a good idea to at least be able to finish it. So with running not ranking very high on my activity list, I solicited the advice of experts (the shoe people at Dick’s Sporting Goods). I explained that running is usually a very painful experience (like driving nails into my legs) for me and that a 5k wasn’t something I was really looking forward to, but said I would do. To my amazement, the experts explained that this pain could be caused by not wearing the proper ‘running shoes’ and that with the right equipment I might actually enjoy running (I know, try not to laugh). So after trying on several pair of ‘running shoes’, I finally selected the Adrenaline GTS 7 by Brooks (retail at $94.95). This shoe is super light weight, has a slick black/blue/zinc/white/grey color scheme, and comes with a long cushioned midsole that actually provides a comfort when pounding the pavement. I’m now running two plus miles with zero pain in my legs (my lungs are a different story) and no longer despise the activity with every fiber of my being. A very comfortable shoe that seems to forgive my heel to toe stride (I don’t know if that’s good, but I was once told running should be done on the balls of your feet. Again, I am not a running expert). So forgiving my complete incompetence of all things running, this shoe has been perfect for me and a definite rating’s HIT! And who knows, after a couple of 5ks, I might actually like running (providing I live through the first one).

Navan Cognac
November 14, 2006 | Drinks

Be careful, this will get you hooked!  Navan is an absolute perfect mix of vanilla and cognac.  The smell alone will grab your attention and make you want for a taste.  And though it can fool you with the candy like flavor, at 80 proof you must sip to enjoy.  Though it is best served neat, slightly chilled or poured over ice will give your mouth a fantastic ride.  Cool coming in, it quickly warms your mouth with a strong vanilla taste.  A little thick, it sticks to your palettes which lets the taste linger long after you have finished the drink, which is dangerous because it leaves you wanting more.  Navan is a very nice desert drink or something to warm you up on the colder nights.  Amazingly priced at $29.95 in North Carolina it is definitely worth a taste.

NFL Sunday Ticket Super Fan
November 7, 2006 | Entertainment | TV

Attention to all die hard football fans—If you love football at the highest level, you MUST have NFL Sunday Ticket Super Fan.  Almost every game in High Definition (Would be every game but CBS won’t pony up the cash for every market), a Red Zone channel that switches between games, stat channel, and the game mix channels that allows me to watch 8 games at one time.  If you have cable, drop it and get DirectTV before next season.  This is a must have for pure football fans.  $299 for the Sunday Ticket and an additional $99 for the Super Fan (Payable in four monthly installments), Direct TV provides complete football satisfaction for less than $25 dollars a week.

Columbia Steens Mountain Sweater
November 1, 2006 | Outerwear

Another cold weather item, the Zip Down Fleece will keep the cold out.  Being somewhat a fan of light winter wear, I wanted something to wear during the 40-50 degree weather we commonly get in North Carolina.  Owning a couple pull over fleeces, the zip down fleece caught my eye.  Easy to put on, easy to take off, works well with the 20-30 degree daily weather changes.  Priced at $29.99, it’s a great gift idea.

Columbia Solitude SoftShell
October 25, 2006 | Apparel | Outerwear

Needing a few new items for the upcoming winter weather, I picked up a Columbia Soft Shell jacket.  With a slick outer shell and warm inner lining, the soft shell provides warmth and style.  Made of 100% polyester, it’s easy to clean and maintain.  It also comes with zip down outer pockets and two inside pockets.  With the help of a few friends I was able to get this jacket at half price, which is a steal since it is reasonably priced at $89.99 from Dick’s Sporting Goods.  I recommend stopping by and trying it on, I liked it so much I bought two!!

Jose Cuervo Tequila Family Reserve
September 21, 2006 | Drinks

Reserva de la Familia---Bravo!!.  Sipping Tequila—an oxymoron?  Not anymore.  At a local pub one night someone was gracious enough to introduce me to such a thing.  And though I am not much of a tequila drinker, after just two shots (an extra one just to make sure) I rushed right out and bought a bottle.  Though the price ($89.95 in NC) did give me second thoughts, I still added a bottle to my collection.  And after a few drinks this will now become a permanent member.  Twice the price of Patron, and ten times as good, please do not make the mistake of mixing this with anything.  This is a drink best served chilled and straight.  And at the $14 a shot price, you should enjoy this sip by sip and not shoot it.  Though I recommend trying this as often as possible, do so responsibly…they go down like water, but it is still tequila and they will get you.

Rockport Borrego Springs Sandals
September 14, 2006 | Apparel | Footwear

Not really wanting to spend full shoe price on half a shoe, I finally broke down and bought a pair of Rockport sandals.  Having several pair (4) of Rockport shoes, I have grown accustomed to a certain level of comfort that is usually unattainable in a sandal.  But to my surprise, the Borrego Springs sandals (Rack Room Shoes $49.99) lived up to the Rockport name.  Lightweight, complete leather, and extremely comfortable have made these my first option when available.  After a few hours of wear, the foam has molded into a “Just for Me” feel that makes it tough to take off.   And though for me a little high for sandals, they are still better than most on the market.  A good deal for people who like sandals or those looking to break into the sandal-lifestyle.

Just Wireless Mobile Swivel Charger
September 6, 2006 | Cellphones | Gadgets

Ok—Just when you think they have this wireless thing all tapped out, someone surprises you with another great idea.  As a cell phone junkie, I occasionally switch between my cell phones week to week, and after purchasing a new cell phone (Treo 650) I was looking to buy yet another set of accessories.  Stopping by Target to pick up a memory card for my phone I perused through the car chargers and as I was about to spend another $30 on a PalmOne Treo specific phone charger I happened to see the answer to the Middle East crisis (see ratings scale).   A phone charger which can accommodate more than one type of cell phone!!!  To my delight, I found a charger that would fit the Blackberry (6200-7700 series), Treo (650), and Motorola Razor (the latter two I own).  And what would I pay for such a great invention?...$12.99!!!  Though I have yet to find where I can buy just the extra phone connections, I have confidence it must be out there.  For those of us that have multiple brands of cell phones, this is a must have.  And at only $12.99 it gives you a reason to buy another cell phone.
