Bourne Ultimatum
December 30, 2007 | | TrackBacks

"He is SO cool!" I found myself saying this about Matt Damon's character, Jason Bourne throughout the third Bourne movie. And that's how the whole movie was...SO cool. If you liked the first two, you're going to love this one. In this movie, Bourne is being chased by authorities as they believe he has committed a crime while he is simply trying to find the truth about his beginnings as Jason Bourne.

The movie moves quickly and is filled with tons of actions. But it's not empty, violent filled action (if there is such). It's smart, it's inventive, it's unique and it's just SO COOL.

I don't want to spoil the details of the plot but it's definitely worth checking out and buying when it comes out on DVD!

Around the world in 80 days - Michael Palin
July 30, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Monty Python's Michael Palin gets asked to do a repeat of explorer Phileas Fog's adventure of travelling around the world in 80 days. At first I was thinking this was going to be a no-biggie in terms of meeting and in fact being able to easily beat the 80 day restriction.. but its absolutely amazing to see how certain parts of the world are still operating like time hasnt changed since the first attempt.

Luckily Michael's up-beat humor always keeps the viewer entertained and hopefully optimistic that though he's close to 2 weeks behind schedule and stuck drifting 6 days in the indian ocean on a dhow , ancient wooden boat with no modern day facilities, with a crew of individuals whom dont speak English. It was also interesting to see quirky observerations - such as how in China you could buy a calculator but the checkout person would stll use an abacus to figure out how much change to give you back.

I did see that apparently he has been since asked to go on additional adventures (Pole to Pole and Sahara). This is a great series to watch, shows the true reality of the countries he visits and gives you a very well informed view of what to expect if you were to set foot in any of those locations.

Hairspray
July 27, 2007 | | TrackBacks

I have never seen a version of this movie..whether the original movie, on Broadway or even a high school play. Honestly, I was a little skeptical. But my sister who had seen it on Broadway this year insisted it would be great. I walked out of the theater saying, "I love that movie. That was a great movie."

Nikki Blonsky was perfect for the role and she did a fabulous job. She hardly quit smiling or dancing the entire time and she just did such a great job. John Travolta was hilarious as her mother. And hearing him say tired as "tard" or iron "ern" made me crack up every time. Amanda Bynes was cute as could be and her physical humor always entertains me. Although my sister tells me Diana DeGarmo fulfilled the role better on Broadway.

Veterans Christopher Walken and Michelle Pfeiffer did a great job. Michelle had a very Cruella Deville vibe about her that went over well. One might have hardly recognized Zac Efron with the suits and slicked back hair. His blue eyes and inate charm pulled off the Elvis type role of Link to a tee.
The storyline was great. The fluff of the dance show seemed to be grounded with the deep-rooted integration issues they dealt with.

My only issue with this movie was that there were SO MANY songs. Yes, it was a musical but every time they turned around they were singing. And according to my sister, there were songs in it that were not in the original. The songs weren't bad, in fact I enjoyed them. Just be prepared to hear a lot of singing. If you enjoyed movies like Grease or High School Musical, you will definitely like this. And even if you didn't, give this one a try. You might be surprised.

Evan Almighty
July 20, 2007 | | TrackBacks

I was a fan of Jim Carrey and Bruce Almighty . And I'm a fan of Steve Carell (please watch The Office if you do not). But I am NOT a fan of Evan Almighty. I honestly could write a screen's worth about this movie. What I liked was Steve Carell, Ed Helms (also from The Office. You should watch that show if you don't, you know) and Wanda Sykes. They were really funny. I also liked that the movie wasn't irreverant toward God or the story of Noah and the Ark. Steven Carell can be humorous but take things overboard in some of his stuff (think 40 Year Old Virgin) but this had a positive spin on God and the story. Here comes a BIG "but".

But I'm really disappointed in the plot. It was extremely hard to believe even with all that suspension of disbelief stuff. The way he interacted with his work personnel was just weird. I mean all those birds in the office and how his coworkers in reality seemed to accept his explanation? That just wasn't good. And why the beard and why the outfit? And why would he stuff his outfit into his regular clothes and no one say anything until they were piled up on his desk?? And my biggest pet peeve about the movie were the animals. In the original Noah's Ark, the animals were on there to save them and repopulate the earth. I get that. *spoiler here* But this was a local flood and there were all kinds of animals including polar bears and penguins brought in from all over the earth to get on the ark. And then they take a two minute ride into DC with all the animals and then it's over. Why the animals?? And how come they just flooded the country's capital and no one mentioned it or mentioned ANY after affect of it? OK, I'm on a rant. Needless to say either I don't get something or I'm being too picky. Either way, I'm sorry I can't recommend this one.

Rolling Stone - The Biggest Bang
July 2, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Your HD TV, surround sound can give you the granduer experience that the self-proclaimed 'Greatest Rock Band on Earth' can deliver to you in person... but this 4 disc DVD - Rolling Stones The Biggest Bang' set is pretty close and it gives you the chance to watch them perform across a multitude of countries of their same tour which I always love to watch.

It's just truly amazing to see a sea of people at their concerts.. watching this band is something that goes down on your personal checklist of things to do while they are still around because no other band will be the same. I do think that Mick' voice is amazing.. its infact the opposite of Steven Tylers (Aerosmith).. Steve's got older and raspier.. Mick's sounds like its getting younger! He does his dances and struts around like he's married to a 20 year old.. oh wait.. he is..

Disc 3 they're in Argentina, China (first time visit!) and Disc 4 has interviews of the band.. and this is amazing.. the drummer speaks!!! Charlie Watts actually speaks! Its great to see them interviewed and how they naturally act.. Big fans of the band will not be disappointed! I did like the fact that the concerts were in full-length and not the complete taping because Im very fluent with fast-forwarding past boring segments and I rarely had to for these CDs.. except the few songs that I personally didnt care for... I also did get a chance to get re-educated on some of their songs and hearing how they performed them live. I always tend to prefer how live songs are performed as opposed to the taped album version.. they tend to be more liberal and I like free-flowing on the spur type of 'hey' 'yah' and 'ahhhhhh babyyy' thrown in during the chorus..

This set is only available at BestBuy, so hit your local store or rolling">online.. you wont be disappointed.. its a must-have in your music DVD library and its something that everyone will appreciate knowing that you've got a staple in your collection that everyone would love to own

Licence To Kill
June 29, 2007 | | TrackBacks

"You could have had everything." I wonder if Mr. Davi had some kind of premonition about the shortcomings of future Bond movies. Eighteen years later, I'm still waiting for one that can give me the same sense of complete satisfaction Licence To Kill did. I always found that Bond had one thing lacking in his movies and that was the ability to be taken seriously. If he wasn’t over the top then the villains surely were and it never gelled. True when it came down to business he always got the job done, but there was never a time in any of the movies when I wouldn't have minded it if he would've gotten picked off. This was definitely not the case with Licence To Kill. The story is about vengeance, and Bond is not taking orders. He has his mind set on what he needs to accomplish and this time Her Majesty's Secret Service can come along for the ride. Robert Davi is as cool as they come and was the perfect choice to play the role of the cold villain Franz Sanchez, but the surprise for me in this movie was the appearance of a very young Benicio Del Toro. Right then and there you could see his quality and magnetism, and have no doubts that he would be major star one day. Timothy Dalton's portrayal of Bond at his most rawest is fantastic and completely freshened up the franchise. Unfortunately, the audiences were expecting more of the Roger Moore era of Bond and so the studios returned to the old formula which guaranteed commercial success. However, die-hard fans will appreciate that the franchise was once brave enough to make a movie that took Bond back to his core character. You can clearly see Licence To Kill's influence in the latest offering Casino Royale, but the studios compromising and playing safe again turned what could've been a great movie into another dull disappointment. Bottom line, Licence To Kill is the complete Bond film. It has a great story, great characters, and great action. The cherry on top is the super soundtrack which features the excellent theme by Gladys Knight, and a complete gem by Patti LaBelle to take us into the ending credits. Find it, enjoy it.

Shrek the Third
May 24, 2007 | | TrackBacks

So I was one of the millions that saw Shrek the Third on opening weekend. We made it a family affair and it was my 2 year old's first visit to the theater--she did great by the way. Shrek realizes he doesn't want to be a king, finds out there is one more heir to the throne, Arthur, and spends the movie on a hunt for him while Fiona is back home protecting the kingdom from the bad guy, Prince Charming. They each meet some interesting characters in this movie including Merlin who helps them get back home and Disney Princesses who help Fiona. I thought Merlin was quite funny but didn't care for the version of mean step-sisters that trailed along with Fiona. And Snow White got pretty evil looking at one point. However, they did provide some pretty funny comedy. Nothing was side-splitting funny but there were funny parts and it had a pretty good storyline. I don't think it compares to the first Shrek but it is worth seeing. However, I wouldn't spend the 20 or 30 bucks for the fam to go see in the theaters. This one is a wait-for-video.

Reaching for the Moon
May 15, 2007 | | TrackBacks

"So you're not coming. It was all....a joke." How do you heal? How do you mend a broken heart when you find out that the only person you’ve ever fallen in love with, belongs to someone else? Watching Reaching for the Moon was very touching and thoroughly enjoyable. Many of us know who Douglas Fairbanks is, but for those who don’t well let’s just say that if he were to be planted in space, he would light up the skies brighter than most stars. Very charismatic, and with a very contagious laugh, it was a lot of fun watching him go through the various stages of gaining the affections of the lovely Bebe Daniels. The setting of the story on an ocean liner was perfect and really added to the romantic atmosphere, and with the beautiful musical score playing from time to time, you couldn’t help but be seduced. This DVD version runs at just a few minutes over the hour mark and could be considered a shortie compared to today's standards, but that just gives it a repeat value for me. However, the quality of DVDs from Passport have always been a mystery. While they have produced great quality releases on many of the classics, they really missed the boat on this one. The less than expected quality and movie logo won’t deter die-hard fans from enjoying this gem from the past, but for those who expect nothing but the best, look for it on any of the classic movie channels.

What The Bleep Do We Know?
May 10, 2007 | | Comments (1) | TrackBacks

Do you have that friend who you think is smart and is curious as hell about how everything works? Well if by everything its the human body then this is the perfect DVD to give as a gift (Price: $14) . I love science, which is why I practice what I do, however this movie takes me a step beyond simple biology and chemistry. It brings in quantum physics and relates it to the human body and cells on the atomic level. A movie that I found fascinating while watching, yet more importantly, it left me thinking about a lot of things differently long after I was done watching it. I love thought stimulation and this movie did exactly that, for me. Again, like most things I enjoy watching, a background in the sciences will certainly add to the enjoyment, while a lack of it can end up stimulating something that has been dormant, a sense of curiosity that wont go away.

Blood Diamond
March 23, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Ive got to mention this movie.. I thought Blood Diamond was amazing.. Im not saying this out of any biases, for I do not recognize any of the cast except for Leonardo DiCaprio (Danny Archer) and he's not in my top 5 actors to watch list. First off.. no sex/kissing/intimate scenes! How amazing is that? I didnt think it was possible to make a movie without at least a inferring to intimate activites... this one did it! The plot was amazing, and brought a clear image of the in-humane experiences that diamond workers are put through and how its all ultimately caused due to the worlds fascination with buying sparkling materialistic rocks. I was wondering what the new slogan 'conflict free diamonds' were all about and now it makes clear sense after watching this movie. It's a great movie to watch and realize that Djimon Hounsou's (Solomon Vandy) role was a great example of how a seemingly insignificant person can be the whole reason for change. It's sad to know that things happen on this planet at the hands of villains and go unreported. It's even worse to realize that the product supplied by the villainous enterprises are sold at high prices to the world market which in turn continues to fund such mistreatment.

Lord of the Rings: Trilogy Platinum Series Extended Edition
February 22, 2007 | | Comments (2) | TrackBacks

I've managed to somehow completely miss out on the LOTR movies.. till now.. I got the platinum extended edition which is supposedly more in line with the director Peter Jackson's vision of how the movie should be watched... since I havent watched the original versions.. I cant tell you what the differences were.. but it is good to see a movie which got better as the movies went on. I think its a great movie to own if you've got a HD [beautiful scenery] setup, and at least a dedicated weekend to watch them all back-to-back.

Now there were parts of the movie where I got disappointed... fact that the wizard came back was a downer... seemed too obvious that there would be a scene where a wizard supposedly dies and then comes back alive later.. and things seemed to fall too expectedly in sequence.. I almost could tell what was going to happen next, and I hate it when I can do that.

Big Love
October 19, 2006 | | TrackBacks

3 wives.. first one (Jeanne Tripplehorn) is dominant/motherly, second (Chloë Sevigny) has an ego-centric attitude and the third (Ginnifer Goodwin) has regrets about everything.. all married to one husband (Bill Paxton) a polygnist protagonist. Imagine the stories/plots they could create with this chemistry! Now add in the seven kids and the fact that their faith is 'United Effort Brotherhoood' (a fundamentalist splinter group of LDS). They all suck in keeping secrets which makes it sometimes funny. Really entertaining series, a lot of well developed characters and Roman Grant is the root of all evil (he's the prophet of their church). Big Love has announced that they're doing a second season so catch up on how to kill someone by lacing their iced-tea with anti-freeze coolant by buying the 1st season on dvd

Chef! - The Complete Series One
October 17, 2006 | | TrackBacks

"Everton, let me explain things to you. In the world of cooking, I am Einstein, Lucinda is Isaac Newton, and you are a mud-dwelling unicellular bit of jelly with a predilection for consuming its own excrement." Brilliant, absolutely brilliant! A few years ago while dining at a hotel, I was fortunate to be within earshot of an interview in progress. It started off nice enough with the usual small talk, and then within minutes I and a few others were experiencing one of the most intense interview sessions I know I've ever heard, and hope never to be a part of in the future. Cooking is a serious business and the opening theme for Chef lets you know that it is indeed a 'Serious Profession'. After watching season one of this fantastic show I can appreciate the interview a lot more, and understand that chefs look at their efforts more than just a meal, but more as a work of art. The casting is great, and the writing is top-notch. A total joy and a must have in any comedy collection. Available for about under $20 at Amazon.com

Turtles Can Fly
October 5, 2006 | | TrackBacks

Turtles Can FlyBeing the first movie, available at Amazon for $26, out of post invasion Iraq with the main focus rested on the Kurds, Ghobadi had his hands full making this movie. So what do I think of it? Knowing the history of the region was quite helpful, and knowing how sad life can be for those who dwell there is definately not a good combination for a fun movie. The movie is sad by any standard, eye opening to the ignorant and simply a great piece for those who know little of what life can be like for the Kurds. The movie had an effect on me, had I been much older, and in the same situation as i am now, I would have simply broken down, traveled to Iraq and adopted a Kurdish orphan. Its a great movie for those of us who know what goes on in that region and yet not so great for those of us who live in a bubble.
