Rolling Stone - The Biggest Bang
July 2, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Your HD TV, surround sound can give you the granduer experience that the self-proclaimed 'Greatest Rock Band on Earth' can deliver to you in person... but this 4 disc DVD - Rolling Stones The Biggest Bang' set is pretty close and it gives you the chance to watch them perform across a multitude of countries of their same tour which I always love to watch.

It's just truly amazing to see a sea of people at their concerts.. watching this band is something that goes down on your personal checklist of things to do while they are still around because no other band will be the same. I do think that Mick' voice is amazing.. its infact the opposite of Steven Tylers (Aerosmith).. Steve's got older and raspier.. Mick's sounds like its getting younger! He does his dances and struts around like he's married to a 20 year old.. oh wait.. he is..

Disc 3 they're in Argentina, China (first time visit!) and Disc 4 has interviews of the band.. and this is amazing.. the drummer speaks!!! Charlie Watts actually speaks! Its great to see them interviewed and how they naturally act.. Big fans of the band will not be disappointed! I did like the fact that the concerts were in full-length and not the complete taping because Im very fluent with fast-forwarding past boring segments and I rarely had to for these CDs.. except the few songs that I personally didnt care for... I also did get a chance to get re-educated on some of their songs and hearing how they performed them live. I always tend to prefer how live songs are performed as opposed to the taped album version.. they tend to be more liberal and I like free-flowing on the spur type of 'hey' 'yah' and 'ahhhhhh babyyy' thrown in during the chorus..

This set is only available at BestBuy, so hit your local store or rolling">online.. you wont be disappointed.. its a must-have in your music DVD library and its something that everyone will appreciate knowing that you've got a staple in your collection that everyone would love to own

Enrique Iglesias - Insomniac
June 25, 2007 | | TrackBacks

I've been a fan of Enrique for at least six years that I can recall. And it's been about that long since he's come out with a new CD. I preordered mine weeks before it was even released a few weeks ago. I've got a mixed review on this one.

Some observations I have about the CD: He's got several Spanish and mix tracks on there (I have the iTunes version). I skip those and I kind of wish they weren't on the CD . Although I do have to say I actually like the Spanish versions better. His voice suits it well but you know, the whole I don't know Spanish thing kind of gets in the way.

Most of the songs are ballads, classic Enrique material. However, there's so many in the middle of the CD they sort of just become forgettable and I usually skip songs like Sweet Isabel and Little Girl.
He's got some heavy pop and hip hop influences on the CD which I think is great. In the past, I think he's had a hard time coming into mainstream American radio. His sound is really unique and it never has seemed to fit anywhere.

The lyrics of a couple of the songs are VERY suggestive, even downright explicit in some cases. I kind of cringe at those. On the flip side, a lot of the songs are very sweet and romantic.
Fans of Enrique will enjoy songs like Miss You and Don't Forget About Me. The latin genre influence is clear and old fans will liken it to his older music.

Several of the songs have potential to be BIG radio hits despite or in some cases because of the lyrics. I imagine Do You Know, Push, On Top of You, Tired of Being Sorry and Somebody's Me will all do well.
I'm guessing unless you are an established fan of Enrique, there's no need to buy the whole CD. However, songs like Somebody's Me is worth checking out by just about anyone.

Chop Shop
June 22, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Ok, normally the only music reviews we post are of released albums that everyone can buy. I mean, that's kind of the point of the website. But I came across this band last Friday at one of my normal hangouts in Charlotte that was incredible and I just had to recommend. If you happen to be in the Charlotte area and want to hear some live music, you need to check out Chop Shop. These guys were amazing, full of energy, and kept the place going until closing time. They play songs you don't normally hear a cover band play, such as "To Be With You", "Eye of the Tiger", "Land of Confusion", and "Signs". And they pulled everyone one of them off and gave each their on little flare. Jason and Rich provided the vocals and bass guitar while Sam was a show by himself on lead guitar and Sean kept everybody on track with the drums. I'm telling you, there were several times when they had everyone out of their seat, when's the last time you've seen that from a cover band? Now their website needs a little help, but apparently they haven't been playing very long so I'll give them a pass and their myspace page is pretty good (seriously guys, get rid of the left to right scroll bars. I have a 42" monitor, I shouldn't have to scroll!!) I'll be out to see them again, when you visit, tell them we sent ya.

Maroon 5 It Won't Be Soon Before Long
May 29, 2007 | | TrackBacks

I heard the single Make Me Wonder on the radio and thought it was a great song and actually was counting down the days until their album came out on iTunes. And then Blake Lewis sang their previous songs on American Idol and I got even more excited to buy their new album. I know they've had previous hits but the samples for the new songs seemed so fresh and different. I've got it playing now and it's so great! It's like a combination of alternative, retro, dance, 80s, electronic, rock, pop. And maybe I left out some, who knows. It's just a really cool, unique sound. You can listen to it front to back, over and over. A few of my favorites are Make Me Wonder, Won't Go Home Without You, Wake Up Call and Figure it Out. Definitely worth buying the new Maroon 5 CD!

Katharine McPhee
May 3, 2007 | | TrackBacks

First let me say the album artwork, full of pictures of Katharine McPhee, are beautiful. But the album itself was hard to review for me. This is the second review I've written for this, undecided which way to go with it. I guess this is the version I'm going with.

The album is pure pop. Katharine wants to be a pop star, no doubt. I thought of Britney, Christina and JoJo while listening through. And I'm a sucker for pop music, so I really want to love this album. But I just don't think I do. The lyrics aren't fabulous as a whole and most of the ballads were simply boring. But the good news is that doesn't mean this album is a flop. I have decided that being pop music, the goal for it is to be popular. Ok, duh, I know. And that being said, she sounds great on here and I do think she has several songs that could easily be overplayed on your local Top 40 station, added to our iTunes playlists and then disappear altogether a few weeks or months later. OK, that was said a little tongue in cheeck and maybe a little harsh. But really it's true.

Take Open Toes for example. That song makes me want to dance every time I listen to it and I can definitely hear it on the radio but I can not get over the lyrics! Open Toes? Really? I suppose if Fergie's lyrics can make it to radio with success, it has a shot but I always hope for so much more every time I hear it. And if it does have radio success, I don't imagine it carrying any weight in a few years. Just to be clear, I'm not dissing Fergie too much..hey, I was a Kids Incorporated fan too and she sounded great on American Idol this season. I'm just sayin' I don't think songs like London Bridge or Open Toes have too much longevity to them.

As for her current single Over It, she did well picking that as the first single as it's easily the best song on there. I can listen to that on repeat with no problems. Others that I think have a chance...Love Story, Home, Not Ur Girl, Do What You Do, Dangerous and Neglected. So see, that's not bad. So what's my recommendation? Save yourself a few dollars and buy the singles you like as they become popular on the radio.

Bucky Covington - Bucky
April 30, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Bucky Covington’s album came out today and I got to listen to the whole thing through clearchannelmusic.com. I was shocked and amazed. He sounded REALLY good on there. Not all the songs were great songs but he has a fantastic recording voice. His voice reminded me of a George Strait, maybe Tim McGraw-ish shound but it’s very distinct. It has this raw, authentic country sound that I think country fans will appreciate. He may not have proven to be the best performer/dancer on American Idol but I think he should get some good radio hits out of this one. Really impressed. Maybe because my expectations weren’t high, I’m not sure, but it’s worth checking out.

Elliott Yamin self-title album Elliott Yamin
April 12, 2007 | | Comments (5) | TrackBacks

OK, so I'm "Movin On" in my reviews of former American Idol contestants albums. Which, if you've checked out Elliott's new CD, "Movin' On" is his first song. Very catchy, pop tune that I happen to like. Another faster tempo song on this CD I love is "Alright". Probably my favorite on there. It has this addictive, make-you-want-to-move beat that works out great while sweating away on the elliptical. The other ballads that are easy to listen to although a bit repetitive in the lyrics and full of Elliott's sometimes excessive vibrato are "Wait For You", "One Word", "You Are the One", "I'm the Man", "Train Wreck", "Take My Breath Away". Other songs I haven't listed unfortunately I simply skip. They're just not good songs to me and I'm disappointed in those. As a whole, I would say this is a soulful, pop/smooth R&B type sound that is nice to listen to. Although there are some songs I can't recommend I think the good outweighs the bad and it's worth checking out.

iPod nano
January 26, 2007 | | TrackBacks

I love my iPod nano! I could just quit there and recommend everyone should have one (and yes, I am probably the last one to have one) but I can say a few more things. I sort of wish I had the video iPod. However I find that for one, I like the smaller size of the nano and two, I am usually doing something else while listening to the iPod which would not allow me to actually watch the video even if I had the ability. And even though I only have the 1GB, I find I have plenty of room for the music I currently want to listen to as well as several podcasts and then some leftover. I'm also happy with the fact that this does play podcasts as well as store pictures. Loading the podcasts and music from iTunes is about as easy as plugging in a USB cord and you can find just about any accessory you want seeing how popular they are.

Kellie Pickler's Small Town Girl
December 7, 2006 | | TrackBacks

Thanks to a coworker, I was able to listen to Kellie Pickler's new CD free online at CMT. I am an avid American Idol fan. I've watched almost every single episode since Season 1 and I once considered myself an avid country music fan. So it made good sense that I would possibly buy Kellie's CD. At first listen, I was impressed with Kellie's voice. She really sounded good. Authentically country and none of that flat, sharp, off-pitch stuff Randy complains about. So I was familiar already with the first track "Red High Heels" which I think deserves to be on the radio. I got to number 3 and thought "Things That Never Cross A Man's Mind" could really be popular on country music radio. One of those catchy, surface level songs you could laugh at. Sort of like Lonestar's Mr. Mom. But as I listened to the rest of the album, I got a little tired of the lyrics continually talking about her now well-known family history and memories of her Southern town. I should have been warned from the album's title, but this record may be a little too country for some folks. I mean, the words Wal-Mart and Nascar both are included. Trust me, I'm on no high horse, I watch Nascar every week and visit Wal-Mart weekly but the record seemed, I don't know, a little like a first record, you know? So I doubt I'll be buying the entire record. I think she'll have some hits on this one, no doubt. She does sound good and there are a couple good songs, but I am really looking forward to her next one.

Daughtry
December 5, 2006 | | Comments (1) | TrackBacks

Honestly, I was scared I wasn't going to like this album. Chris made it a point to everyone that he was going to put a rock album out. And I'm not a huge fan of rock. He stayed true to his word, put out a rock album and guess what? I like it. Really like it. I know I'm probably biased, one of those that claim to like him since seeing his first American Idol tryout. But I think this is legitmately a good album. The group Slash is featured on the song What I Want and I'm sorry to say I like this song the least. Very rock and just not catchy. Chris impressively pulls out some falsetto on Breakdown, one of my favorites--yes, I have several. A lot of the lyrics were written or cowritten by Chris and are full of heartbreak, lost love and struggles in relationships. A little sappy but liking the lyrics balances the rock sound for me. It's an album where you can listen to the whole thing without having to skip anything and every once in awhile replaying a few of them. I don't think a majority of the songs will make it to the radio but I'd be surprised if he doesn't have a couple hits from this one.

Il Divo - Ancora
August 19, 2006 | | TrackBacks

Il Divo If you’re into opera music, with a mild pop twist then you will love this CD. The CD is slow in nature along with a song featuring Celine Dion, which is great for relaxing. Most of the songs will sound familiar to many, since they are common hits yet with a Spanish redo. The artists are very diverse and offer a great mix of baritone opera mixed with a mild pop combination, that I have come to enjoy very much. The group was introduced to me via a girl that I met one night, and so, to be fair, here’s a Thank You to Marisa who did more for me in one night than most girls have, through many dates. The CD can be sampled and had for $13.99 at Best Buy
