Pavonia Skin Care

pevonia_caviar.jpg
I’ve always looked much younger than my age, and I’ve enjoyed it tremendously. I was genetically lucky, since I did absolutely nothing special to stay that way.
Then I hit my 40s. I thought it was bad at 30 when I finally got hips, but this was worse. Adult acne, wrinkles, and stuff I think they call ‘crepe’ above my eyes. Creepy is more like it. Who wants to see their mother in the mirror?
I was not and never would be a dedicated product user, so I needed something that would work simply and quickly. I tried a lot of different products with no real results until I tried the Pavonia line. Crepe-ee eyelids were cured within days, I have very little acne, and the wrinkles have slowed down to a distinguished few. I can live with that.
I now use the caviar line that includes a cleanser, a cream, serum and lotion. The gift set of these costs about $350, so they’re not cheap, but they last.
And I’m still not a dedicated product user. Although I use the cleanser every day sometimes I skip the rest.
I wonder what I’d look like if I was actually a girly-girl?

Banana Boat SunDial Self-Tanning Moisturizer
June 7, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Banana Boat's SunDial Self-Tanning Moisturizer is the best I've tried so far. I like the fact it is as simple as putting on lotion. And in fact, this tanning lotion let's you "dial" your shade of tanning going from all lotion to all tanning lotion to any mix in between. They say the lotion has some sort of chemicals to make the tanner go on more smoothly but you know, you never can tell. Even though I am pretty pale, I found using the dial all the way to the tanner was just fine for me. In fact, it took two applications to get the shade I wanted. So I'm not really sure how well the whole idea of "dialing" your shade is but I guess when I run out of the tanner, I'll just use the rest of the lotion. I like the fact the color was very natural, not orange at all and it was not streaky in the least. It also handled the tough spots--the knees, ankles and elbows--with grace. No dirty looking knees here. I also liked that this didn't leave you smelling all self-tanning-lotiony. It didn't have a great smell to it, but it wasn't a bad or annoying smell either. The only real problem I have with it is it the same as what I like-it's like putting on lotion. That's hard to do by yourself on your back and hope to get any semblance of evenness. However I think this one will be the one I stick with for now and it's good enough to recommend.

Sally Hansen Airbrush Tan
May 11, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Imagine spray painting something with Color Wonder paint. Great concept for kids, not so much for the tanning process. The part that you spray right looks great but there are runs where the paint was gloppy and the missed spots are obvious. It irritatingly asks you to rub the application in after sprayed on which to me defeats the whole purpose of spray. In any case, it comes out clear from the bottle and dries in 60 seconds so after spraying you have right about 23 seconds to rub it in to make sure the coverage is ok, still not really knowing if you are getting it right.
The good news is it isn't streaky, it actually does start showing up in about an hour as the packaging promises and it lasts about a week. The tan is nice when it is applied just right but that's easier said than done. I can't wholeheartedly recommend Sally Hansen's - Airbrush Tan ($10) since it's not foolproof but if I don't find another product that leaves a tan as quickly and as well, I may just have to make the extra effort with the application process.

Neutrogena MicroMist Sunless Tanning Spray
April 16, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Summer is coming upon us and that means my lack of a tan is becoming more apparent as the days go by. My last attempt at a sunless tan was Neutrogena's MicroMist Sunless Tanning Spray. A couple good things...it was extremely easy to apply, even on your back. The results were not streaky and even. It dried quickly. That's about it for the good stuff. My complaints start at the application. In the past I have used sunless tanners that have a bronzer included and it was so nice to have an instant tan so I could walk out the door with results and also tell where I had applied it. The spray was completely clear and besides your skin looking "wet", there was no other way to make sure you had good coverage. But my biggest disappointment was the lack of tan! I am very pale and bought the Deep shade hoping for good results and the next day I honestly couldn't tell if I had applied it or not. And even after I applied it two days in a row, I still saw very little results on the 3rd day. Unfortunately, this one didn't make the cut.

Redken Smooth Down Heat Glide

Redken%20Smooth%20down.jpg

I have thin, delicate hair that gets color-treated with high- and low-lights every 6 to 12 weeks (as if you couldn't tell;). It’s fly-away, prone to split ends, and, if I don’t watch the heat settings, it can get to feeling like straw between salon treatments. Luckily, my daughter (“Product, product, product, Mom!”) introduced me to Redken Smooth Down Heat Glide. I use ½ pump after washing and mousing, smoothing it through my hair from mid-length to the tips. No matter what hurried-up high-heat stretching exercises I put my hair through in the morning; it now looks smooth and just-from-the-salon sleek. My daughter’s hair is thicker and longer, so she uses two to three pumps per use. You can also smooth a little extra on after drying and styling, especially on those especially wet and humid days when frizz is a real problem. And it smells great! I found prices ranging from $14.00 to $17.00 dollars, but at a few pumps a use or less, it will last a long, long time.

Purpose Dual-Treatment Moisture Lotion with SPF 15
March 12, 2007 | | TrackBacks

"Unless you live in a submarine and work in a coal mine, you have to wear sunscreen on your face."

This is what my dermatologist told me two visits ago. And I agree, the sun can be brutal to your skin. So I've been on a hunt for a great moisturizer and sunscreen combo and after several trial offers from my dermatologist, I think I've found one. Purpose Dual-Treatment Moisture Lotion with SPF 15. The lotion doesn't burn like fire on contact and leave your skin extremely oily like some I've tried. You should be able to find it at your local drugstore for around $9.

Wet 'n Wild Lip Gloss
February 28, 2007 | | TrackBacks

Lip gloss is in, right?? I hope so because that's all I wear anymore. And if you've shopped and used lipgloss much, you know it can get expensive as each tube is not cheap and you go through it quickly. But I found a cost-effective, neutral lip gloss that I've caught more than one friend smearing on the exact same thing. I feel 12 years old saying it, but check out Wet 'n Wild's MegaSlicks Lip Gloss in Bronze Berry. It's a great every-day color and cheap enough to get several tubes at once to tuck in all those makeup bags and pocketbooks. You should find it for $1.99 at your local CVS or Walgreens.

Crest Maximum Strength Sensitivity Protection Whitening Plus Scope Toothpaste
October 16, 2006 | | TrackBacks

Some products I'm completely loyal to (see my last post) and then there are others that I welcome new variations of. Toothpaste is one of those.  I have yet to go get the Zoom whitening done so I'll take all the help I can get and usually that is in the form of whitening toothpaste.  Unfortunately I have sensitive teeth and used for too long, my poor teeth can't handle regular whitening toothpaste.  I believe I found the right toothpaste for me...Crest Maximum Strength Sensitivity Protection Whitening Plus Scope.  Wow that's a mouthful, but the name pretty much says it all.  Since using it, I'm not sure how white my teeth have gotten, but I haven't noticed any sensitivity issues I normally do with regular whitening toothpaste.  It's a little on the expensive side for toothpaste at $4.50 a tube but I'll call it a Fair Deal.

Alterna Enzymetherapy Hemp Thickening Compound
October 3, 2006 | | TrackBacks

thickener I have been faithful to the Bed Head hair products line for 5 years now.  I went out on a limb this week and got my hair cut by someone new.  And new salon means new hair products.  I was out of my Bed Head thickener and requested a replacement from the new stylist.  I was given Alterna Enzymetherapy Hemp Thickening Compound for $18.60.  I was really disappointed.  It may have made each strand of my hair thicker (although I'm not convinced it did), but it provided absolutely no body to my otherwise fine hair to give it any kind of stylizing ability.  I'm going to stick with my trusted thickener, Bed Head's Small Talk which lives up to its promise to be a thickifier, energizer and stylizer for $15.95.

Exotic Coconut Body Lotion
September 20, 2006 | | TrackBacks

Usually I am a bit baffled when walking into Bath & Body Works.  I'm quite an indecisive person.  In fact, one time I was taking a personality test and it asked if I felt I was a decisive person.  I looked up at my mom and said, "Mom, am I decisive?".  She just laughed at me.  So walking into a store with 25 standard fragrances and about 10 products per fragrance plus whatever else they have is a bit overwhelming.  But last weekend at the mall I was in the mood to spend some money and I remembered a gift card I had from Christmas still so I let myself pick out whatever hit me without having to make a decision on picking just one thing to buy.  One thing I ended up with is body lotion scented with their new fragrance Exotic Coconut.  It's a creamy, sweet coconut smell that isn't overwhelming to everyone in a 50 foot radius but enough to know you put it on even several hours ago.  And even better?  They've got a Buy 3, Get 1 Free sale to help out with the $10 price tag.

Venus Vibrance Razor Blades
September 5, 2006 | | TrackBacks

venus2.jpgAs a twenty-something American female, shaving is an unfortunate daily chore and unless you have found some Nair product that actually works (please let me know) or have resorted to laser hair removal on your entire legs, you are always searching for a great razor blade. On my last trip to find such razor blade, the Venus Vibrance razor blade caught my eye. With it's pretty hot pink wrapper and promising name, I bought a pack. I could tell it was not good on it's first try. After two sessions, I changed the blade to another refill in the pack hoping something was wrong. It was the same. What I now know as the "exfoliating feature" felt like sandpaper on my legs. It may have done its job of "exfoliating" and actually shaving, but it was not a good experience. You can find a pack at CVS for $11.39 but I would recommend continuing your search for that perfect blade with another product.
